Yes, in general, if you over stress the spring, it can cause problems later on. I would not do it.
The Walther P99s used to have 16 round mags. But, they discovered that when police officers left the mags loaded over time, they started to have issues. So, they backed the mags down to 15 rounds to ensure reliability. So, just 1 extra round could stress it.
