Why don't you pick up one of the S&W 10 round .22 revolvers? Maybe it's just me but I'm not a real big fan of .22 semiautos other than the ones made by browning. An M&P in .22 would defeat the meaning behind the M&P moniker because I doubt the military and/or police would ever carry a .22

Just my two cents.

The 22LR conversion kit for 1911s is a very popular item. It's like having two pistols in one.
