Will 40 FMJ be enough for back-up protection during a hog hunt in Texas? How about a new pair of running shoes? seriously will 40 be enough or just piss them off?

Better than nothing, but I would be using hollow points. I would think that a 40 S&W hollow point would be fairly effective on hogs, I would definitely go to 180 gr on an animal like that.

The big boars have a really tough shield that is hard to penetrate. I would stagger every other round with FMJ/HP.

back up for what? what's the primary? if your using dogs you won't need a backup. secondly use a primary that WILL get the job done and not might get it done. myself used a 12gauge with remington 3" sluggers and have done an excellent job. they go down and and never move again and it does it quickly too which is good. have seen other use 45acp and it just pisses them off. you'd be suprised how tough they can be, they have a tough shield and clot quickly.
