Shooting 50 yards today in preparation for deer hunting day after tomorrow 11/24/06. Setting position, leaning back on 3 wheeler front tire. 90% on 8-1/2" square sheet of paper using Speer Gold Dot bullets with my own load recipe. I'm ready if I can get the deer to stand still. I'm hoping for a 25 yard shot. This M&P 40 is really acurate. Good pistol and perfect fit for me.

Geeze, a deer with a 40. I'd love that. Till Pa lets semi auto Handguns I'll stick with my Anaconda.

What is the avg lbs of a deer out there?

Really can't answer the weight question. I haven't got a good sized one yet. I'll find out tomorrow morning over coffee at the Shell station what average field dressed weight is. They get pretty big eating so much corn in this area.

Ok, I got the 100% accurate size data for deer in this area. Tis info is from one of the guys that has deer hunted every year since he came home from Vietnam. The largest buck he got field dressed 227 pounds. Most of the larger does field dress around 180 pounds. And then of course there are a lot of dog sized ones. Probably average field dressed weight would be about 150 pounds for a nice doe. There are some really large deer here. I need as big a target as I can get. Tomorrow is opening day. I probably won't sleep tonight thinking about it.

Hope you have a succesful hunt.

Our deer season starts monday hopefully a suicidal deer wonders in front of me (that is usually what it takes).

Of course I am jealous that you get to use your M&P. We are stuck using wheelies.

Didn't get a shot at a deer. Most of the fellows hunting the suraounding farms had about the same luck. Weather was too warm, and not enough hunting the early antlerless only season to put enough presure on the deer to get them moving. But 2 more weeks and me and the M&P will be out there for the Iowa regular 2nd gun season (9 days long). Hopefully have some snow and drives going on that should get the deer moving.

I passed on a really small 6 point with the 500mag this morning, didn't figure there would be much left. The doe with him was bigger than he was.

It's second gun season in Iowa. I got a itchy trigger finger and took a doe that turned out to be a lot smaller than I thought it was when I shot it. It was already crippled. Blasted it from 35 to 40 yards with the M&P 40. 2nd shot brought it down like a rock. Gold dot, high through 1 rib, then the bottom half of the back bone, and exited through rib on the other side. First shot at angle through flank, through boiler room, out left front quarter through leg. First shot would have done it. But I lost a wounded deer last year and was determined it wouldn't happen this year, even if there wasn't any meat left on it when I was done shooting.

Haven't seen many deer. None the last 4 days, so I guess I'm lucky to have gotten the one I did. Shot at a few coyote with the M&P, hit one but he kept going. Hope to get one close enough to blow it to smithereens with the 40. I'll be pissed at my self if a nice buck comes by while I'm trying to bushwhack coyote.

there are a couple of counties in southern iowa that allow rifles as well. I'm looking to pick up a 30-06 later this year for an all around hunting rifle. I'd like to take a couple of trips to the black hills next year
