I have a couple, not as severe as yours. I believe it is the result of creating the finish. AFAIK it is a dipping process, and my guess is that is the result of bubbles at some point.

as far as i can tell, they don't come out, nor do they seem to adversely affect anything.

Every gun I have had in here has those marks on them. I have not confirmed this with S&W but I believe these to be related to the Melonite treatment or the final machining process.

I agree with Dan, all the M&P's I've handled/ shot (dozens) have had SOME sort of finish "blem" from Melonite process , 9's, 40's, 357's, xx's

I just chalk it up to being what it is..a $400 service pistol..JMHO

Has anyone actually called S&W about these lines yet?

I have them too, around the end of the extractor and on the barrel lug (?) which is visible through the ejection port. Not as bad as the posted images, but unbecoming of a quality firearm no matter what the price is. Has anyone asked S&W about them, before I do?

Yep, I have them. Maybe we could start a sub club for guys with the marks

Funny, I just cleaned mine tonight, getting ready to fire it for the first time this weekend, and I noticed the marks. Thought what the heck???? Then came to this forum and walla! A thread!

This forum is too cool

There are some on my M&P 40 too. Gives it some character. Makes it blend in better with me kind of like camouflage, cuz I always got coffee stains down the front of me. So the piece doesn't show when it's tucked in my belt.
