I just bought a brand new M&P9. I disassembled the new gun to clean it, and found that the front half of the recoil spring appears to be painted baby blue. The aft half of the spring is bare metal. My Hoppes cleaner started to remove the blue paint, so I stopped. Has anyone seen the paint before, and is it ok to scrub the paint off of the spring? I'm afraid if I leave it in the half-removed state it is in, for fear it will gum up the firearm.

Thank you.

Every M&P recoil assembly started out with a painted spring (I believe blue means it has a 16 lb. spring), but once it leaves the factory that paint serves no purpose.

Our f/s M&P40 pistols had blue, but the M&P357 was green (about 17 lb.).

My M&P9 has a blue painted spring and my M&P compact has a yellow one. I think the 45 is red

I read that the colors are used during assembly to help identify which gun the spring goes in.
