OK. good news I have working prototype of my custom XS rear sight. It works great. I will get a picture posted as soon as I can. I am on my lap top right now on patrol.

It has a single small tritium vial dot in the post line. It will look in the day pretty much like a normal XS sight picture and have the Hienie straight eight look at night.

I will be getting some more done as soon as I can get some sight sets in from XS. I have a few sets ordered in and will be milling and getting some inserted ASAP.

I do need to know how many folks here want these. Like I say I'll get a picture on here ASAP. Cost is a little higher than I like but I have to buy a produced sight then modify it. Cost for a set will run $140. That's the front and rear.

This is the XS sight with the tritium vial. The only difference that will be on the final ones ,will be the vertical line will go all the way to the bottom of the sight so it will be more visible in the day time.

I plan on milling and shipping to insert in about a week. Cost for factory set is $85 for custom with night insert in the rear is $140.

I've been researching different night sights to add to my M&P40. I'm curious about these as well. What are the advantages/disadvantages of these compared to Meprolights i.e. three dot sights? I'm just a recreational shooter, my M&P is my home defense/ccw. Sorry if the question is too vague.

With that out of the way, quite simply the Big Dot sights offer the fastest sight acquisition possible. The dot itself presents a front sight that is visible if there is available light and the tritium vial allows you to find the sight in extreme low light/no light situations. Our sights allow you to watch what is happening in the world around you while still being able to see your sights. If you decide that you have to fire, you can instantly switch to a front sight focus to make a precise shot.

Our standard M&P set does not have a tritium rear sight due to its height. This custom modification of David's gives you a dot in the rear that will allow you to see the rear sight even in extreme low light, with a low light sight picture similar to a straight eight.

Dave, since I already have the standard XS sights installed and 2 sets on backorder I will probably shoot them for a while as is before I decide to buy a new rear. If Im happy with them as is I'll leave them be. If I decide I need a tritium rear I'll see if you still have any available. But I don't want you to count on my order.

Tell him there is a spring that will fly out under the rear sight! He needs to capture that spring. If he doesn't know it's there he will loose it for sure.

Good point. Also, DO NOT USE A SIGHT PUSHER!! Unlike other sights, ours are solid 1144 stressproof. If you use a sight pusher and the sight binds, you will break the sight. The dovetail needs to be fitted. If they have any questions, tell them to call us. The phone number is 888.744.4880. These are a relatively simple installation, so they should have no trouble.

I will back up Joes words on the XS big dots being fast. Also for OLDER guys with not so great eyesight they give a front sight which can be picked up.

When XS called and asked for one of my guns to use to design the sights on and then to display it at the SHOT show i was happy to do that. They make a great product.

One word of caution on the big dots I have seen from years of using them and teaching folks to use them. Some get sloppy with the lolly pop of the front sight centered and on the stick. This is the key for any precise shots. These sight are very capable of long range shooting. Some say the ball will cover the target and I can't hit at long range. This is not true. At close range the rounds land in the ball, at any real distance the round strikes just above the ball. I have hit with good consistancy 12 inch round plates at 150 yards with them on my Glock 17.

Joe (and anyone else who wants to chime in...)

A recent article in a firearms publication (Handgun Magazine?) on sighting systems got me to thinking. The only "constructive" criticism they had on many sights was a lack of contrast. The author seemed to favor FO sights for the contrasting bright colors they provide. His opinion was that white could disapear in the background clutter of curtains, walls, etc.

I guess my question is why is white used rather than say neon green or hunter orange for the dot. Something to contrast with the background. Next, if I were to get a set of Big Dot sights and wanted a different color, would it be difficult or not advisable to paint the front dot (masking off the tritium first)?

I do understand that this was one author's opinion. I just thought it would be nice to get some more varied input.

Thanks!

Actually the different color works very well. At the risk of being beat down. I know the author of the story you are speaking of and we have SUGGESTED this to XS. I know of many folks, myself included, that do just that. I paint mine a bright kind of yellowish green. I know of quite a few folks with blaze orange painted on the Big dot front around the tritium. It works very well.

The reason that our sights are white is that for most people, white is the last color that you loose in poor light. People are different, so you might have different experiences, but I am speaking in a general sense. I haven't had the issue with loosing the front sight, but I am 28 with excellent vision. It is possible that it could occur.

If you decide to paint the front, you need something that will stick to PVC.
