Is changing the rear sight on an M&P (and/or a SW 1911PD) simply a matter of taking out the set screw, removing the old sight replacing it with a new one, and tightening the screw?

Thanks in advance.

On both of those pistols, the rear sight holds down the firing pin safety parts, down in a hole in the slide. It can be tricky to reposition them while reinstallation.

Any sight installation with a dovetail can, may, and/or probably will require fitting to acheive optimum fit.

1. Losen the set screw.

2. Mount slide in a wood vise.

3. Use brass/aluminum punch to break sight loose toward ejection side.

4. Stop about 2/3rds of the way out and cover with a plastic bag.

5. Finish removing sight while "catching" metal cap and spring.

6. @#$%ing spring flies out and you are thankful for the plastic bag!

Sight is now off!! Reverse procedure to re-install, make sure you use the bag again!!

Thanks much!

Dear Coltman 1985:

I have a nice sight press that should help ( I have done the front sight.).

I really appreciate the directions, especially the tip about the spring.

I remember naively taking the grip panels off my brother-in-law's Colt 90 series on a porch deck when I was cleaning it some years ago.

It was a miracle that I found all the springs and pieces!

It actually worked (e.g., decocked etc) when I put it bck together.
