Clean vs Dirty Ammo -- Good Deals?

7425 Views 10 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  BSTOCK
You all know that I'm new to this, so making an ammo choice for practice and eventually SD is driving me crazy. We plan on shooting at a local indoor range, and I don't know their policies, however, I'd like to shoot something that is fairly clean (there is asthma in the family) but not a budget killer.

I've seen the White Box deals with costs as low as $0.13 / round, but again, I'm told that it isn't the cleanest of the low-cost bunch, so I did some digging around AmmoMan and The Armory and came up with the following for 1K purchases (I'm planning on going in on a split order with a friend).

If anyone would care to comment on the quality, performance and price of these ammo deals, please do -- I really need help making my decision. Some of them are out-of-stock, but I'd be willing to wait if they will restock.

Here's the List ...

Here's a URL where someone has put together a list of online AMMO vendors:

I notice Olympic ammo on your list, there are 2 brands of ammo to stay away from, American Ammunition (Amerc), and Olympic, these two are probably the worst quality brands of ammunition available on the US market.

Here is a link to the Ammunition Review and Reference on AR15.com, the listings are derived from reports from people who have actually used the ammo in question, they are listed in the order of preference, note that Olympic is the brand at the very bottom of the list, fully 50% of the people who have used it will never buy it again. Note that below the list is a note about American Ammunition (Amerc), there is a specific notice to avoid American Ammunition at all costs. Amerc has the dubious distinction of blowing up more Glock 40's than any other brand of ammunition.

Wholesale Hunter might still have some AE40R3 40 S&W 165 Grain FMJ Ballistic for $8 a box. 1K comes to $172 with shipping. If you can buy a lot or split a order it comes out cheaper because the shipping tops out at $13 for as much as you want. I bought 6K of this for $973 to my door. Came out to $162 per K delivered.

They didn't have it on the site last week but they must have restocked because it seems like you can order it now. Good luck. http://www.wholesalehunter.com/privatespec...ire-Handgun.htm

Sorry, I just noticed you were asking about 9MM. If you have a Dick's Sporting Goods nearby they usually have UMC 9MM on sale for 5.98 a box, case price. 500 rounds for 59.80. It's good range ammo and the price is right. It's the only ammo I can buy cheaper than online.

...............and Wolf..........
I would get the Speer Lawman or Fed. Am. Eagle from Ammoman.

Since the Lawman is cheaper, that's what I would get.
Actually Wolf isn't bad for plinking, I sure wouldn't use it for defense or anything like that. Be aware that some of those bulk boxes of ammo that are available, the ones that are marked Not for law enforcement use or for practice only, they mean it, these are usually from some production lots that don't meet the first line standards for reliability by that maker, they are fine for plinking.

Just came back from the local WalMart and they had Winchester White Box 115gr 9mm Luger in 50 and 100 (loose) boxes.

The price on the 100 was about $12.90'ish.

They also had CCI Blazer 115gr 9mm Luger in 50 boxes (with nice light-weight holder for all rounds) for $6.22.

Being new to all this, i figured, "Let's look at one of each, side by side."

The WWB cartridge appeared to have a much brighter casing, while that of the CCI Blazer was a bit duller in finish.

If I were to choose on aesthetics alone, I'd have probably gone with the WWB, but I believe I've heard some good reports on the CCI Blazer, and since it was every so slightly cheaper, and I could easily count all the rounds in the neat little case, I bought 2 boxes of the CCI.

I hope it was a good move, but for $13, I'm not out alot if it isn't all it could be.

Was it a good buy/choice? Please let me know!

Thanks!

... EDIT ADD ...

It's actually CCI Blazer Brass Ammunition, if that makes a difference.

I've seen the Blazer Brass advertised, but yet to see any in person, last time I looked at my local WalMart they primarily carried WWB. Except for self defense ammo I shoot my own handloads.
I have shot a lot of the Blazer brass. It's as good as WWB; maybe a little cleaner. For plinking the Blazer aluminum is a better deal. I just bought a case of Blazer aluminum 9mm for $5.86 per box at Academy.
Cet,

Don't know if you have a Dick's Sporting goods in your area, but this remington ammo is good target ammo and reliable at a bargain price. They run Sunday adds in our local Buffalo Newspaper and have been extending this sale for months:

Check out Dick's Sporting Goods if you have one in your area. Sunday's sale advertises following pistol ammo on sale:

1) Remington UMC 9mm FMJ 115 grain $5.98/ box 50 - 10 box case price.

2) Remington UMC .45 ACP FMJ or .40 S&W FMJ $9.98/box 50- 10 box case price. ( I know the .40S&W price isn't that great, but .45 at $9.98 isn't bad)

Most Dick's coupons for $10 off a $50 purchase have small print on the rear saying excludes firearms and ammo and a bunch more stuff. I buy my 9MM from Dick's in 10 box lots on sale and that comes to $59.80+ tax. They always take the coupon so it comes out to $49.80+ tax for 10 boxes. Comes out to $4.98 a box. If I have 3K of ammo I go through the register 6 times & use six coupons. The coupons are business card size. My son always finds many of them in the parking lot and on the floor in the store. I give him $10 for every one I use. You bet he finds a lot of them.
