Have occasional fails to extract. Could this be due to dirt "behind" the extractor? I.E. between it and the body of the slide(forward of the pin).

If so how to clean.

Make sure you're getting the extractor hook clean too - the part that interfaces with the cartridge rim. A pipe cleaner works well.

You should be able to move the extractor by hand - see if it binds or feels gritty.

I flood the extractor with clp or similar, then move the extractor in its normal arc. Then I soak all the crud out with a papertowel and then blow it out with canned air.

A stiff bristeled tooth brush dipped in cleaning solvent is what I use to get behind the extractor. If you need something more rigid use a tooth pick.
