I own a M&P 9mm and have a question about cleaning and maintenance. The way I am cleaning now is taking the barrel out, cleaning the entire slide etc. then cleaning the bore out after each shooting session. My question is, should I be cleaning out the striker mechanisms, and inside where the firing pin is etc. as well the trigger mechanisms etc. and if so, how is this done? how do I take it down easily past the basic field stripping? This is my first striker fired pistol. Thanks all!!

Cleaning

Cleaning is up to the individual, you don't have to do a complete strip DN every-time. The things you are doing are adequate, plus clean behind the extractor after each use with a tooth pick or dental tool, to ensure proper feed and case extraction is recommended. Please keep all cleaning fluids and oils away from the firing pin hole, so that a build-up of crud on the pin itself is limited between Major cleanings every 2-3 K rounds as Jester suggested. Lets Roll!

I always pull my striker out on mine, and even clean the extractor. I tear it down fully about every 3k rounds and clean it.

I've used everything short of a sledgehammer to get the slide cover plate off (Item 2 in the pic). It won't budge. I'm coming up on 1k rounds downrange and would like to clean this area out. I don't want to damage anything by forcing too hard. Any tips appreciated!

Edit

OK, slap the dummy. The cover slides up from the slide not out thru the back.....

Take a pick and slide the white plastic sleeve forward and it will pop out.

you have to move the striker forward with the safety button depressed, then slide the sleeve forward, and it slides right out.
