Has anyone had any coatings applied? AKA NP3, Duracoat, gunkote or anyonther?

I really like the Melonite finish. I imagine it would be a pain to take that finish off to apply something else. I guess that's one of the fun things about cars and guns. Once it's yours, you can do what you please to it. I'm sure there will be some creative schemes.
I love the finish also, just curious about the different tastes.
I did an NP3 on my SA-9sc. it is hard to rack the slide due to the slick nature of the coating. I went with a new finish because of the poor wearing I was getting from the original finish.

I'm having a 6904 done in Roguard, which is also slick I hear, but with the ambi safeties, racking the slide will not be a problem on that one. i'd hesitate before messin up that S&W slide.
I tried Roguard and it didn't last very long at all. Try one of several PVD (physical vapor deposition) coatings such as Titanium Aluminum Nitride, Tungsten DLC or Boron Carbide. Check with Brycoat or IONBOND.
If I didn't like it the way it came, I wouldn't have bought it-don't like bright guns though I do carry 3 stainless guns as backup to my M&P .40
one of the top reasons I didn't like my XD was the finish, Great pistol overall, but the finish sucked. Them M&P is top notch.
Stainless steel with Melonite finish - nothing else is required! All the after market finishes that offer an extra measure of protection are made redundant by melonite. Some might like the look, but in terms of metal protection, it doesn't get better than melonite on stainless.

Agreed.
I have sent 3 M&P magazines to Robar to have them NP3'ed.

I'll let you know how they turn out.

I had a 5904 NP3 lower/black Rogard upper done a few years ago. It seems to work fine but was a bit expensive. The nice thing is the NP3 is sort of a free "action job" because it slicks up the action. The Rogard wore a bit on the high points, but I don't know if I expected too much of it or what. It does look nice and is probaby as good as or better than my Armory Kote TRP. As far as putting it on the M&P, part of what interested me about the gun was the Melonite over stainless. I think it is as close to a abuse/neglect proof as you can get (I keep thinking cop-proof, that angle). Hard-chrome over stainless might be the only thing better, but the cost would probably take it out of the market it is meant for.
Melonite is only a metal finish. There is a coating applied on top of the Melonite.

The best finishes are physical vapor deposition or PVD finishes such as Titanium Aluminum Nitride and Tungsten Diamond Like Carbon. This can be done to your slide. Contact The Accurizer Gun Shop in Troy, MI:

I'll have her send my M&P slide to have it coated with the Tungsten DLC. I've had one 1911 coated with W DLC and one with TiAlN and they are remarkable in their wear resistance.

What kind of coating do you think is applied? Melonite is a trade name for Nitriding. We use it in the tooling industry for stamping tooling and nothing is applied over it.
I refinished an old shotgun with Brownell's GunKote. I don't use it much, so I don't know about the wear properties.
Why change a good thing, the finish is excellent and as Yogi would say its just as good as Money.
I like the melonite finish. Its really rugged, for a production hand gun. I will keep it the same. Might buy a used M&P and have it blasted to stainless steel color, but thats after the compact M&P is added to my holster.

Robar's NP3 finish looks great on these mags. I got them back from Robar a week before IDPA Nationals. They function checked ok and I used them for 2 days in the rain and mud at Nationals. I am very pleased with this coating. I just sent my other 3 mags to Robar to have them coated with NP3 also.

I'd like to see pics, I have been thinking about doing this.
Jester,

I'd love to post pics but since the forum change I can't figure out how or where to post them.
