What do ya'll think of Double Tap ammo? Specifically the 9mm 124 gr +p gdhp. Is this better than speer's 124 gr +p. I currently carry powrball but am uncomfortable with the light weight and apparent problems with penetration from standard tests. I'm also open to any other suggestions...except winchester ranger T...which I can't obtain (unfortunately). Thanks for any replys in advance.

Increased fps, something DT is known for, is not necessarily a good thing. Ammo is designed around a certain velocity. You can't just ramp up the velocity and expect the round to function as it was designed.

Gold Dot's 124gr +p is a good load. It made Doc's list here.

Why can't you obtain Ranger-T? Its available on the internet. Not that you need it.

Here are the ballistic gelatin results for DoubleTap 9mm and .40. Note the similarities in penetration and final expanded size of the bullet. This data certainly calls into question whether there was ever really a "need" for the .40 to be developed.

First measruement is penetration into the "four layers of demin and some cloth" FBI test and the last measurement is how much the recovered bullet had expanded to in inches.

9mm+P

115gr. Gold Dot JHP @ 1415fps - 12.00" / .70"

124gr. Gold Dot JHP @ 1310fps - 13.25" / .70"

147gr. Gold Dot JHP @ 1125fps - 14.00" / .66"

.40 S&W

135gr. Nosler JHP @ 1375fps - 12.10" / .72"

155gr Gold Dot JHP @ 1275fps - 13.00" / .76"

165gr Gold Dot JHP @ 1200fps - 14.0" / .70"

180gr Gold Dot JHP @ 1100fps - 14.75" / .68"

200gr XTP @ 1050fps - 17.75" / .59"

The general "word on the street" is that the Double Tap ammo is quality stuff at a fair price.

I've liked what I have purhcased so far (he is the best source of "hot" 10mm hand-phaser ammo). Delivery is pretty quick too - if I order on Monday I generally have it before the end of the week.

Now, supposedly, Winchester has come out with a new second-generation Ranger-T bullet that also expands impressively with those wonderfuly sinister starfish "talons" extended (rather than curled back along the side of the bullet). Just don't call them "talons". That spooks the sheeple into stampede mode. Winchester calls them "petals" .

Although I do like some things that Double Tap is doing, the extra velocity in the their 9mm Gold Dot loads are not needed. As Chooch stated, the Speer Gold Dot 124+P performs as designed.

So if the original poster doesnt mind, can I impose a question in regard to Double Tap's 357mag rounds and the opinions on those? At this moment I have Gold Speer Dots 125gr in my Ruger SP101 but noticed that Double Tap states some very impressive Velocities (of which Im not sure if this is a good thing in the 357mag round?) I was thinking of ordering a box soon so any yea or nea's would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I've heard good things about DoubleTap, but I have 2 problems with them. 1) I never could get them to return phone calls or emails. 2) I never found data on muzzle flash with their products. Anything loaded that hot makes me wonder about muzzle flash.

Assuming a 4"barrel my first choice for a 9mm load would be the "LE Only" Federal HST that anybody can find on the Internet for a very reasonable $19/50rds. The Ranger-Ts are about a buck cheaper but I worry about legal entanglements. Of course I live in California and our criminals love to sue. I think that the HST is going to be at least as effective without the ugly reputation.

DoubleTap uses "low flash" powder. I think what you are experiencing with trying to contact them is they are a "victim of their own success" and are working hard to keep up with orders as word spreads about them.
My personal concerns were with their 40 and 45 caliber rounds so may not effect the 9MM +P rounds. Their 40S&W and 45acp are hauling butt without the benefit of +P pressures which makes me think slow burning powder using every millimeter of barrel length to accelerate - which would equal potential for a lot of muzzle flash. Of course I could be wrong but I never could get an answer from them.

Why is it so hard for people to just stick to Doc's list?

The following loads all demonstrate outstanding terminal performance and can be considered acceptable for duty/self-defense use:

9 mm:

Barnes XPB 105 & 115 gr JHP (copper bullet)

Federal Tactical 124 gr JHP (LE9T1)

Speer Gold Dot 124 gr +P JHP

Winchester Ranger-T 124 gr +P JHP (RA9124TP)

Winchester Partition Gold 124 gr JHP (RA91P)

Winchester Ranger-T 127 gr +P+ JHP (RA9TA)

Federal Tactical 135 gr +P JHP (LE9T5)

Federal HST 147 gr JHP (P9HST2)

Remington Golden Saber 147 gr JHP (GS9MMC)

Speer Gold Dot 147 gr JHP

Winchester Ranger-T 147 gr JHP (RA9T)

While I do think that doc's list is the best some people may just want a different cartridge. I don't blame them. Use what ever you shoot best with and are most comfortable shooting. My .02
