I am thinking about installing a front fiber optic sight on my M&P. I have never used a fiber optic sight. I was wondering which color you all prefer. I am leaning towards the green, but I have seen many people use the red also.

I can get either:

Red

Green

Yellow

Which one should I get?

IMHO, get the one YOU can see the best. The only one I've ever used was red and I liked it, but I've never tried the other colors.

Don't forget Orange.

There is no right answer here you are just going to have to try them and figure out what you like. Make sure you try them with the shooting glasses you are going to use as some lens colors will enhance or suppress certain colors.

From Truglo:

Q: Which fiber color appears the brightest?

A: During dusk or dawn conditions, most shooters prefer green and yellow. Red fibers appear brightest during bright sunshine.

I will say this, green is the color best seen by the human eye. That is why NOD's and various aviation instruments use green luminescence and gauge lighting. The lights can be dimmer and still seen better then comparative colors. From my understanding, this is also partly the reason why the Army has moved from red lens interior lighting within mech vehicles and aviation assets to blue lense lights for map reading. Blue light seems brighter to the naked eye, but is less well seen by NODs (incase your wondering, they didn't move to green lenses because again, they are too well seen by the naked human eye AND all terrain marked in green on the map as "woodlands" would be lost under the green light). This is a big consideration for aviation and mech assets.

Just a tid bit (probably more then you wanted) of info for ya.

I've shot the green and red FO fronts - The red was just too busy for me and I found that my shooting suffered some past 15yards when shooting at speed. The green, on the other hand, is much softer and easier for me to track.

That being said, I still much prefer an all black front sight - .100 wide on my competition guns and usually a .120 or so on my carry/duty guns. I personally wouldn't carry a fiber optic sight on a duty type gun but that's just me...

If you get a fiber optic front you can easily switch to different colors and test each -

Fiber Optic Sights

Many of the fiber optic sights it's not that hard to replace the fiber optic rod/pipe and the rods are very inexpensive and in that case I wouldn't worry too much over the initial color. If you don't like it you can change it. Check Speedshooterspecialties who have a forum here. They sell Red, Green and Yellow at 50 cents an inch.

I have front red FO on my new M&P (Dan Burwell installed), Hi-Viz Red on my Glock 34, and TruGlo's TFO's front and rear which in TFO I believe only come in green on my Glock 19. TFO's are Fiber Optic and Tritium combined. I really love those sights and hope they come out with for M&P.

I do like the red for outdoors, but they are not that good for indoors though I'm too lazy to change till the rod breaks just for plinking.

I have learned from the HiViz which do break occassionally to always carry extra rods in the range bag. I've yet to have the TFO's break and I have carried the gun.

Except for the TFO's or Overmolded Hi-Viz (mine aren't) I wouldn't use FO's for carry since they can break.

I did note that HiViz now has an overmolded M&P sight available. http://www.hivizsights.com/Smith-Wesson-M-...ght-P120C9.aspx BTW HiViz says you cannot change the pipe in their overmolded sights.

I thought Kenny did but a quick check of his web site proved me wrong. I have some instock for Kenny's sights.

+1 on Kennys FO Front Sights!!

Dan Installed them on both of my M&P's.

I have an Orange one and a Red one, I'm still undecided.

I have to shoot them a little more to make up my mind.

fiber optic

Got mine in today for the full sized from Speed Shooters and am getting it put on tomorrow. You're welcome to try it out, I got red but the rods can be changed very easily. Also got a factory night sight for my compact.

Personal preference, but I'm using a Speedshooters FO in green on my M&P and its been working great! I shoot in mostly bright sunny daylight and the orange I was using on my 1911 was too distracting...I couldn't see the edges of the front sight for those long shots. I've shot a few indoor matches as well and surprisingly, I could still pickup a little of the FO from the indoor lighting.
