Well, after 3 months of waiting for S&W to send it, and 2 more months waiting thanks to CADOJ red tape, I finally picked up my brand new MPTxxxx compact this afternoon. I will be taking it to the range tonight to run as much ammo through it as I have time for...which may only be 400 rounds. I want to put 1000 rounds through it or discover my mags dropping ASAP...whichever comes first. So we'll see.

I've already noticed the mag release is significantly stiffer than my fullsize, but that's a non-issue for me anyway since I don't have a problem of inadvertently pressing it while shooting.

I ran it as fast as I could through 259 rounds before I had to leave. The pistol got so hot it burned my hands. Thankfully, no malfunctions of any kind. I was a little disappointed I couldn't put more rounds through it. I'll have to hit the range at least one more time this week and we'll see how close I can get to 1000.

My impressions? I hated the short grip, as I suspected I would, but I'm working on a solution to rectify that. I was actually surprised at the recoil. I had not fired a M&P compact .40 before and from all the reports I expected it to be less. Overall I thought my .40 P2000 was more fun to shoot. Since I was on a mission to blow through as much ammo as I could I didn't even bother to attempt to shoot accurately so I can't report on that, although I'm sure its as accurate as it needs to be. I previously mentioned that the mag release is much stiffer than my fullsize, I also found the slide release/lock to work as easily as any other pistol and did not require the amount of pressure necessary to release the slide on the fullsize.

I'll report back as I continue towards 1000.

Thanks for reporting.

I guess I need to fire a .40 compact. My 9mm compact doesn't have that much more recoil than the fullsize; it just feels more snappy. In fact, I usually shoot it with the short mag because that is the way I carry it. I have shot a G26 and G27 back to back; and I can really feel a difference between those 2.

Anyway, keep us updated.

Chooch,

I'm just curious, how come it took 3 months and what's the red tape all about.
I'm not really sure why it took S&W 3 months to send it. I was purchasing the pistol with the Academy Class Purchase Program at a reduced price direct from S&W. My sense is that the wait may be the norm. When ordering, I was told to call after 30 days if I didn't hear anything, it just happened to take longer. It is possible that they designate a certain number to be sent out with this program, or maybe they were waiting for this new batch to come out. I don't think MPTs were in the shops 5 months ago, so maybe I was getting the latest run. During my wait I know that S&W was sending out compacts to dealers, even by special order, so there's something different between those transactions and mine.

The red tape was a paperwork mix up and misapplication of federal law by CA DOJ. In trying to find a solution, both sides (DOJ & ATF) kept passing the buck blaming one another. I'm just glad it finally got resolved.

I understand that living in Kalifornia you have to put up with many socialist rules and regs. but still, 3 months? And, what is a Academy Class Purchase Program? When I bought my MP 9mm compact ($499.00+ tax, probably paid too much, but...) I bought it at the gun range as I walked in and was shooting it as soon as I checked for obstructions in the barrel. Shot it right out of the box! I didn't even plan to buy one that day but, there it was calling out to me. Whipped out that little plastic card and shazam, it was mine!! But what else could I have done?

Actually, five months since the red tape was another 2 months. :?

Become a M&P armorer and you can purchase a gun at a discounted price. They call it the Academy Class Purchase Program.

Ok I ran another 400 rounds through it tonight and I'm happy to report it was flawless. That brings it to 659 total rounds. So far I've only used WWB. I discovered that the rear sight is a bit off, but that is easily fixed. My wife wants to go shooting tomorrow night
so hopefully I'll be able to hit the 1000 round mark. I checked my mag catch and it looks pristine. I am very encouraged by this.

Funny you should mention that. With the pistol just sitting there in the case for so long before I could pick it up I was wondering if I might find a spot or two. Nope.

So no mag drops and no rust...imagine that.

I didn't get back to the range until today. I now have 1009 rounds of WWB through this thing and I have reached my goal. Zero problems. Mag catch looks good, by the way.

Next range visit I'll run a bunch of RA40T through it to make sure it feeds well which I expect it will. I qualify with it on September 6th and will begin carrying it shortly after that. I am pretty happy about that.

The paper that the pistol is actually wrapped in is a dessicant, moisture-wicking paper. Sitting in its factory package is highly unlikely to cause rust or corrosion of the metal components

I'm going to go bring mine to about 1k rounds tomorrow, possibly more. Still no stoppages of any kind and the trigger is getting better with firing. Also no obvious wear in the mag catch or other parts. I love it!

Funny thing...with a thousand rounds through it, it might have increased in value since people seem so nervous about buying these things. Not that I'm thinking of selling it.

Glad it working out for you so well choochboost. I don't have as many rounds through mine yet, probably around 600 so far, but I also have had no problems at all. I love the Compacts.
