I just picked up a brandy-new M&P40 here in the People's Republic of MA. Our stupid ass attorney general sees fit to require all DA handguns to have a 10 pound or more trigger pull. My understanding is that the free state M&Ps have a lighter pull, more like 6.5 pounds.



Ofcourse, these attorney general regulations only apply to guns that are being sold by FFL dealers. Once I own the thing, I can do whatever I want to it. For example, now that I've bought my 10 pound trigger, I can lighten it to my hearts desire...



So the question is... What part(s) do I need to order from Brownells?

Nope... The regulations only apply to FFL dealers selling new guns. Once I own it, I can do whatever I want to it. For example, back when it was legal to buy a Glock here, they all came with NY-2 (12lbs) triggers. The guns had to be sold that way. But, right after I bought my new Glock 19, I went back into the same dealer 2 minutes later, bought a normal trigger spring, and they even installed it for me. All totally legal.

I was looking at the schematic on Brownells, and noticed that they don't list different trigger weights for any of the parts... At all, as far as I could tell.



So maybe a new Sear Housing Assy is the right way to go. Does the Sear Housing Assy actually contain all the trigger parts that aren't the trigger return spring and trigger bar assy?

I don't know if they will tell you or not, but you might call S&W and see if someone will tell you exactly what parts are different. I have a couple ideas of what they might have done differently to the triggers, but I would have to look at one to be sure.

I think I'm going to go ahead and order a new Sear Housing Assy from Brownells, and see what happens. They list 3 different versions.



No Internal Lock

No Internal Lock, No Magazine Safety

Standard



Currently, my gun has both the internal lock and mag disconnect. I would assume that is the Standard Sear Housing Assy, and that if I order the one from Brownells, I'll get exactly what I have now, but without the 10lbs trigger.

Seeing as how the trigger return spring is cheap, I'll probably just backorder one. If one or both of the trigger return spring and sear housing don't fix my trigger, atleast I'll have spares if something breaks down the road.

Brownell's delivered my new Sear Housing Assy today, and as expected, I now have a 6.5ish pound trigger!



For those interested in the details... The difference in the trigger pull is accomplished by using a really beefy spring and detent under the sear. You know, the spring and detent that go flying when you push out the pin that retains the sear. In the 10 pound housing, this spring and detent are easily twice the size as the ones in the 6.5 pound housing. The sears are identical. As far as I can tell, the housing are otherwise identical, except that the 10 pound hosing has a much larger hole, to accommodate the larger spring and detent.



Also, the shape of the sear disconnect level is different. The new housing came with a lever shaped like a > sign, where as the original 10 pound housing came with a lever that looked like a |. The levers ofcourse function the same.

As far as the take down lever being different smith goes back and forth between the two stright and curved levers.

Thanks for the info. That is one modification that I guessed Smith might use. I figured that would be the easiest way to add weight to the trigger; but I wasn't sure Smith would do what was easy. It does look like Smith is trying to keep it simple with the M&P. I like that.
