Got my Shield 2.0 4" 9MM slides from CDNN today (sights, too)

9023 Views 102 Replies 9 Participants Last post by  M1A4ME
Guys, these are new slides. Not a mark on mine. Wrapped in blue plastic (bag) inside that greasy/waxy feeling S&W brown paper. Sights are in a foam lined clear plastic container/display case. Like you'd see hanging from a rack in a store.

Got some of the parts for the slide. Waiting on a barrel. Might try to get the night sights on that first slide tomorrow. No use messing with the striker till I get the striker block parts and the slide back plate.

I need to modify the slide optics cut to get rid of the back pins and shorten the front pins like I did the Shield Plus when I got it.

Then it goes on the Shield Plus frame for a trip to the range for sight in and to see how it shoots.

Okay, temporarily put the Holoson on the 4" slide with the DPP plate so I didn't have to remove the back posts in the optics cut.

Vented 4" barrel from TR-Enabling (supposed to a RemSport barrel, not sure who RemSport is).

DPP plate on the slide. This picture makes the plat look wide but when looking at the slide under the plate it's almost the same. On one side there's not enough plate to catch my finger nail on the other side there is barely enough plate sticking out past the slide. Alignment with the four pins in the optics cut and the screw holes was right on.

Angled from the lower right side, trying to find the right angle to make the overlap visible. Can't see it from the back.

Looking right down the optic. Looks wider here but take into account the angled upper corners on the slide vs. the width of the slide at the bottom of the optics cut.

Just for info, for me the green dots are clearer/sharper dots than the red dots. The red dot Holoson on the Shield Plus is a couple years old. Bought it for the P01 Omega and never used it. Previous to this green Holoson I'd bought one for my P07 (when the trijicons failed and trijicon wouldn't fix them) and found the green dot worked better for me. From now on it's green dots for me.

Well, problems already.

The extractor springs I got from Midwest Gun Works don't work in the 2.0 slides. They only showed one extractor spring and I assumed it was for 1.0 and 2.0 guns. Nope. They will not fit down into the pocket hole in the slide. No amount of pushing, shoving, twisting, or leaning the springs will get them to drop down in that pocket hole. Edited to add = while putting stuff away I picked up my latest order paperwork from Numrich and in spite of my forgetfulness I saw I'd ordered a 2.0 Shield extractor spring. Started digging through the pile of little ziploc bags and there it was, just like the picture on the Numrich site, red tinted and 6 coils. Dropped right into the pocket hole in the slide and I put the extractor on a minute or so later. Just need to trim the excess roll pin where it sticks out in the slide cut for the optic. Gonna order a coulple more anyway as the spares for the other pistols won't fit those 4" 2.0 Shield slides. I don't mind being lucky.

Went to the Numrich site and they show a difference between the 1.0 Shield and 2.0 Shield extractor springs. The 1.0 is like the ones I got from Numrich (the picture anyway) and have 4 coils. The 2.0 extractor springs (the picture) shows a spring with 6 coils and in the side by side pictures the 2.0 appears to be a smaller diameter wire as well.

Now to order 2.0 extractor springs from Numrich.

For info, neither web site/vendor shows a full size M&P 2.0 extractor spring. Only the 1.0 extractor springs. Don't know if they are the same or not.

Still learning. Problem is, next year I'll remember they were different but won't remember which vendor I got the right ones from.

On the brighter side, the striker spring guide, striker assembly, striker block/spring/spacer and rear sight are in the slide. As is the aftermarket rear cover with the US Flag on it.

The front sight is going to take some "fitting on the stone to reduce it's size enough to slide into the slide cut. Not unfamiliar with that. Every CZ front sight I've installed has had to have metal removed to slide in without a 10 lb. sledgehammer. ;)

Oh, as others have stated, the striker block would not fully slide down into the hole in the slide. Found burrs on the inside surfaces of the holes. Got rid of them and got it working.

I ordered the spring and keeper thing but ordered a couple 1.0 extractors. I guess I'll find out if the 1.0's will work in the 2.0 slide.

Do you mind if I copy your picture to my laptop for future use/reference?

I got mine assembled today, but I had to clip the internal extractor spring to make it fit in the extractor. (It hand cycles fine, but I'll take it to the range tomorrow to test fire...Will report...)

Yeah...Now let's see if it works...The pistol was way more accurate than it had a right to be with the iron sights on the 3.1" barrel...
I hope I didn't screw it up...o_O

Don't have optics yet so I was looking for a cover, S&W couldn't get the right part so I bit and got the ebay polymer take-off first, then I got this from NDZ, good fit, just a hair high at the back, cheaper than the recycled one for sure and is aluminum. No screws included, just used 6-32x1/4.

Please let us know how it shoots for you and what ammo you used and how far it was to the target.

I'm still waiting on my recoil spring assembly and I need to get that front sight stoned a little and inserted in the front of the slide. And a good day to get to the range.

OK… I just got back from the Range…2 mildly disturbing things…The slide isn’t locking back on the last round. I’m pretty sure that the monster recoil spring is the culprit… It locks back consistently with the 3.1” slide/barrel, and the 4” recoil spring is a bear…
The other thing is that (@ 10 meters) the pistol is every bit as accurate with the iron sights on the 3.1” slide as with the 407k on the 4” slide. That’s my problem, I’m sure… The dancing dot sometimes works against my trigger control…😁

@M1A4ME I was ONLY LOOKING at those barrels

Have you shot the one you bought YET?
Still contemplating IF I should get one of the CDNN Slides?

About ready to pull my new slide out and put some more time/effort into it.

For that stiff recoil spring (I'll do mine when I get it together later) I'd lock the slide back and leave it for a few days.

Have not shot it. Just got my recoil spring assemblies in the mail today. Right here on the couch beside me. Getting ready to eat and then grab the slide and the stone and see if I can get the front sight close and then grab a brass punch (I think I've got one) put the slide in the bench vise in the garage and see if I can get the front sight in.

Did you get the one with P/N 3009903 for the Shield 4"? It doesn't seem as strong as the one on my factory CA v1 Shield, on that one, I left the slide locked back for a month, plus it had 500+ rounds through before it got easier to cock. TR finally shipped my barrel so we will see.

Have any of you tried putting the 4" barrel in the 3.1" slide? Just wondered.
I would be tempted to at least try it to see...

When CDNN runs out of those $56 slides we will all wish we had bought at least one.
That is what always happens to me.
Just got back from a local shop looking at guns & guitars, left with nothing.
My son bought a $600 guitar for $100, now I have to clean it up & do a setup + new strings = coming later on after dinner.

Yes...I think that's my next move...I know that there are lighter springs available, but I've spent enough for now...
Concerning the extractor spring...I had the same experience. For now, I've robbed the spring from the 3.1"slide and ordered the one you mentioned from Numrich. We shall wait and see...

That's the number on the zip loc bag from S&W. Plastic guide rod (some people object to that but I've not had issues with any of mine in other brands of pistols.)

No. The 4" barrel is tapered to a larger diameter where the barrel contacts the front of the slide/barrel hole in the slide. Not sure what it might do in the shorter slide except be looser.

I do know one thing. Did a plunk test with the 115 grain hollow point reloads I shoot in the CZ 9MM and the factory Shield and Shield Plus pistols/barrels. It's a bit long for this RemSport barrel. Unusual to find a barrel with a shorter/tighter throat that a CZ. For what it's worth, the Apex file to fit barrel I bought/installed in the 2.0 5" FDE 9MM is also shorter than some of my CZ 9MM pistols. Might be a good sign that the 4" barrel has a nice "tight" chamber. Have to wait till (maybe) Wednesday next week to take it to the range. I just need to finish getting it together before then. Should be easily doable if I can get the dremel on that "tall" extractor pin tomorrow or Monday when being outside should be more pleasant.

Re: guide rod for the 4" slide - The "correct" S&W P/N seems to be 3009903, can't really test mine without the TR barrel in my hand, but Jim over on CalGun couldn't get the S&W part so he bought the stainless from Galloway (that one didn't state it would fit the "Shield" FWIW), he bought the 17# version and experienced no failure in his report, but he "felt" it was a bit light and thought of trying the 20#. It could also be that he was comparing to the CA v1 Shield recoil spring.

Jay T pm'd me last night about the barrels. He tried to get his nice and clean and asked me about mine.

Wow. Never had a pistol barrel that nasty before. I had not yet cleaned it and I ran out of patches in my inside the house cleaning kit trying to get it clean.

Nylon brush and Hoppe's#9 wasn't getting me anywhere. Pulled a brass brush out and used it with Hoppe's#9 till I ran out of patches. I'd scrub awhile, then patch it and it would be nasty. Build up/break loose? of crud where the lands meet the grooves along the corners from end to end. I could take a small dental pick and rake the material loose. Some stuck to the tip of the pick and some would just be loose and fall out when I 'd smack the side of the barrel. No idea what it is.

I am wondering if the corners on the lands are rough enough to be grabbing fibers off the patches as I run them through. Not sure yet.

Today I'll hit it with some carb. cleaner, then try some copper fouling remover, then some lead remover and see if the crud continues to build up or goes away. I have a container of JB Bore paste on order. If the chemical/patch/brush cleaning doesn't make that stuff go away I'll hit it with some of the bore polishing/cleaning compound this evening or tomorrow and see if that fixes it.

The good new is Jay T said his pistol shot well. The bad new could be that a rough bore will just make the darn thing next to impossible to really clean well. Can't leave crud in the barrel if you live somewhere there are humidity issues as it can pit the barrels (won't see it with your eye but it shows up with a bore scope I'm told.)
