I got the chance to wring out a Smith model 500 last weekend and what a blaster! It makes my 45acp seem like a pussycat. All that power in a handgun! I could learn to love that thing.

This was the ported 4in model. Very managable.

I belive I can buy about 2 1/2 M&P's for the price of one of those babys. I forget what the man said the price of the ammo was but it was more than i could afford to do on a semi-regular basis.

Oh well, it was fun while it lasted.

How bad was the recoil? I've heard varying reports... my 44 magnum is magnaported and its recoil isn't to bad, but the twist the magnaport creates is worse then its kick. Actually the twist kinda hurts my hand, so I don't fire that gun much.

I didn't think the recoil was bad at all and I am not a big guy. 5-11, 170lbs and I am nearly 63yrs old. It is hard to compare to anything else as there is not much else in it's class. At least anything I have shot. The gun is pretty heavy and ported and like I said before, very managable.

Maybe if I shoot my Kimber ultra carry .45 one handed with full power defensive loads it would compare.

He had fun with it. It was only his second time shooting ever. He came into town his his girlfriend and I just had to take them to the range. I offered to fire a couple rounds first so he could have an idea of what to expect, but he wanted to just try it himself first.

Yeah that was pretty funny when we watched it later that night. The voice you heard was his woman. She had never been to the range before so she had never seen anything like the 500. When he let that first round fly I'm sure she was genuinely frightened which is why she hit the button and stopped recording.

I hunted deer for 2 seasons with the 500 and loved it! Before that was a Raging Bull 454 Casull and i hated that gun. Wish i could get a 500 without porting though cause any ported handgun is worthless for hunting. You shoot more than one shot and your ears ring for 2 weeks!

My friend has one that I have used (4" model). Honestly, with the weight and comp I didn't think the recoil was bad. I thought the lightweight S&W .44 Magnums were worse.

As far as the recoil goes with these guns , it all depends on what loads you shoot. Some aren`t bad at all to shoot but then there are other loads that down right hurt your hand.
