I have been hearing some depressing stories about ammo prices going up about double by next year. Going by the price jump between '06 and '07 I'm inclined to think it's not too farfetched. How much plinking ammo do you folks dare to keep on hand? Or should I say how much would you store inside your house?

well copper has plummeted recently, lead is up a little, but more worrisome is that global stores of it are depleted.

On the whole, current commodities pricing would seem to indicate a rise between 2007 and 2008 like we saw in the last 3 years would not be warranted.

On the other hand, the only time you can have too much ammo is when you are swimming.

Well let see........I have about 75 boxes of 9mm, 35 boxes of 40 S&W, 210 boxes of 17HM2, 40 boxes of HMR, 1200 rounds of 223, 6500 rounds of 22lr., 500 rounds of 19 Calhoon and about 80 boxes of various shotgun shells. I also have a few boxes of 380,38,357,41,44,45lc,480,7mm-08,25-06,300win. and 45-70. This is just an estimate, but I bet it's pretty close.

yes but brass and bullet prices will take months before the new copper prices have any effect.

buy what you can and stock up. cycle the oldest ammo to be used up first.

Sheesh, I feel like a feather-weight. I've only got three or four hundred 40 S&W (plenty of primed cases ready to go), 1200+ 22lr, and fifty 7.62x39. How am I going to defend liberty when the SHTF with this pathetic display? Got another ammo can lately, so it's time to stock up.

6,250 22lr.

3,290 .223

1,090 9mm

Still waiting on my case of .40 to come in. This is all ammo I've bought from wideners.com and midwayusa.com in the past month. I would buy more, but I live in an apartment right now and am running out of room to put it.

Oh, and this isn't some stock up or stash because I'm scared of increasing ammo prices. This is just the ammo I want for a few weeks because I shoot often and I shoot a lot.

Impossible to have "too much", unless as Raz-0 pointed out you're swimming

I generally have a couple boxes around of anything I don't reload for, (and thus don't shoot a lot of).

Calibers I do load for vary from nothing to 1000+. Depends on when I was at the range last

As long as you have a dry and secure place to store it, I wouldn't worry about it.

Well I'd be ridiculed if I actually said how little I have. But all this raises an interesting question, what's the reasonable shelf life of ammo assuming it's properly stored?

I won't ridicule you  In the past I only kept on hand 50-100 rnds. of premium HP, and what ever was left over from the range. I have friends that only keep a box and buy what they need at the range...or mooch from me

The only reasons that I have as much as I do and will continue to stock up(to a reasonable point) is because prices only seem to be going up and I have space for it.

I'm sure that someone will correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm under the impression that if stored correctly...dry and within normal temps. It should last longer that you or me. I've shot some of my grandpa's stuff that was 50-60 years old. No problems.

I think your ammo on hand should be based on how much you shoot. Although you can never have to much when stored properly. I used to buy everything at the range, but that gets expensive fast. Now I buy whenever I have spare cash and there is a deal to be had. I picked up a case of 9mm last week because it was on sale and I haven't been to the range since January.

>1000 9mm

>1000 .22lr

Field Box full of various rifle and shotgun rounds that I'm too lazy to organize

I've shot some .22 my great grandma had that was about 60 or so years old if not older. Shot fine.
