So I woke up the other morning (round 6 am) and look through the doorwall to see 6 patrol cars outside my apartment building. The guy directly across the hall is seldom home. He came home this morning to find a bullet hole in his sons room. he immediately called 911 who dispatched accordingly. Come to find out the bullet came from the guy next to him. One of his 6, thats right 6, rifles went off and through the neighboring wall. Since they couldn't find the guy anywhere, the cops went into the apartment to find the weapon. What they ended up finding was a bunch of World War I and II stuff. A slough of rifles, one of which was "ouzi" like according to the cops. They also found a pretty disturbing full dress Nazi uniform. The odd part is that no one in this building has ever seen this guy. A few of us, all armed of course, asked the cops about the safety of the building. Being that he ws going to come home to a ransacked home, completely empty of firearms, and an eviction notice, not too many felt all that safe. The fact that my wife would be home with my three kids didn't make me feel that much better. All in all they pulled out 7 boxes of firearms and Nazi materials. They're still hasen't been any word if they found the guy yet but the M&P is racked and loaded as the wife now knows how to shoot it, (finally did mothers day). Turns out the guy made some disturbing comments to the wife while she had the kids outside playing. All the cops said was "just don't approach him." They also said "but do what you have to do to protect your family" I gues you never know [/code]

update!

I just got off the phone with the complex office. They said that it will take normal eviction times (30 days or so) to get this guy out. They still haven't found him. I express my displeasure over this and have since spoke to the property managers. Simply stated, they are putting my family in harms way and it wont be tolerated! I have sent the wife and kids up to my parents house while I handle the situation. Local police say there is nothing else they can do untill another disturbance has been called upon. I explained that with myself and 3 others in this building having registered and legal firearms, it may not be a disturbance they want, as we all have little children. I questioned our rights (to be safe) as to when drwaing our firearms would be legal. They said if the gentleman threatens you in any way to call but if he draws a weapon you have all rights to protect yourself. I have a hard tiome believing that this guy does not have more guns elssewhere...ie..car, friends house, office maybe....

Not a good situation.

Good thing is you got your family the hell out of there. And I know by law they need to give 30 days for eviction, but WTF in this case????????? BS to say the least.

Is 6 an evil number? Is that too many rifles to have in your opinion? You seem to be implying there is a problem with the fact that he had six rifles.

I detest Nazis sympathizers but it's possible this guy is just a war memorabilia collector.

That might not be the best thing to say to the cops.

I wouldn't wait for him to move. I'd pack my sh*t, and go.

When my brother first started going to law school he insisted in living in an apartment and doing everything on his own. Being independant, or whatever. About three months into living there some old cracked out war vet moved in across the hall. This guy only had a mattress in his apartment - nothing else. He would sit outside screaming at cars going by everyday. One day the cops showed up at the complex with an ambulance to check on a lady who had a stroke, and this guy runs up to the cop's cars and throws a bucket full of sand/cigarette butts on their cars and runs off. He would make hirassing comments towards girls walking by. Etc.

My parents finally had enough and bought my brother his own house when the guy killed a baby bird, ripped it's jaw open and stuffed 3 cigarette butts inside its mouth, and sat it outside my brother's door before promptly setting my brother's front door on fire.

I say move out now just incase this guy's a nut job. Better to be safe than sorry.

First off, its good to know that you and your family, and those around you for that matter, were unhurt and that your family is off to a safer place till the situation can be resolved.

However, since you dont know the guy from Adam, how do you know he is a Nazi? Just cause he has 6 rifles doesnt make him Satan. In my neck of the woods people might think him looney for having only 6 rifles. Not sure what an Ouzi is, but semi version of an UZI are legal in most places and in many states even the full auto versions are legal so long as they are properly registered with the ATF. As for the Nazi uniforms and such, there ar many people who spent a good amount of their lives overseas getting shot at by Nazi's who collect WW2 memorabelia, including Nazi uniforms, medals, weapons... All it makes them is a collector, not a Nazi or Neo-Nazi. Some of that stuff, if truly original issue is worth quite a bit.

Also, please be careful what yuo say in fromt of the police. Askig about your defensive rights is good, but insinuating that you and 3 of your armed friends will handle the situation is bad juju. If the guy does turn up dead somewhere all the cops will remember is you making threats, and believe me that is exactly how they will remember it.

I don't care if the guy has 30 but I do expect him to know how to handle and care for them accordingly. The fact that he lives in an apartment building is the key here. Yes, they are in his home but they should be locked up or put away or something. There are far too many kids here not to be responsible. The fact that he never reported the gunshot or even went next store to check and see if anyone was hurt is what bothers me.

I originally thought he was a collector untill we saw inside his apartment. Even the cops said he would have millions worth of collectables if they were taken care of. I am talking stuff scattered all over. Old newspapers being used as coasters, Empty ammo boxes full of empty chip bags and used kleenex and paper towel. Doesn't exactly strike me as the collecting type.

BTW.... I never called anyone a Nazi. I simply stated the police pulled out boxes of Nazi propoganda and memorabilia...ie...patches, flags,...etc.

He's certainly a collector, packrat, or hoarder, whatever you want to call it. The fact that his apartment is a mess is irrelevant. I know two guys who have no idea how many firearms they have or what they have and as a result their firearms are not taken care of. They buy, or collect, whatever they want and are under no obligation to take care of it.

There are kids in the APARTMENT complex, so, he should have his rifles locked up within his own home? I don't see the issue, unless you think hes responsible for kids safety that break into his home...

The biggest issue I see here is he had an ND and he MAY be a weirdo (possible neo-nazi?). Your acting like hes burning crosses on your lawn. You are painting a picture that describes him as a neo-nazi radical with "zomgzzz!!oneone+shiftone 6 rifles!". So, is he a neo-nazi, or isn't he?

6 POS WWII bolt action Mauser's wouldn't make him any more dangerous then if he had one.

And what the hell, he lived there for how long before this incident with out any issues, but you felt it necessary to spout off to the cop "i've got guns, you know".

Dude your story is about as factual as I'd expect to find in the NYTimes. Taz is spot on with his post.

wow... yeah.. just pick up and move, good advice.

And i know you love your kids, but the conservative types who are runnign around prepared to pop a cap in the ass of anyone who looks at them sideways baffle me as much as the liberal types who won't let them out to play because they are afraid of the boogeyman.

Kids are great, but you'll enjoy them a lot more if you don't ratchet the anxiety up to 11. Seriously, go to the meanest, nastiest, most dangerous hellhole on the planet, and there will be smiling kids there having a good time if the adults simply stay out of it. They're resilient, and youcan't protect them completely without harming them anyway.

You live in a world with strange people in it who may be less than responsible. If you had the money to be living someplace nicer, you probably would be. And odds are nobody is going to buy you one, so..

In that case, all you can do is take what actions you reasonably can without harming your family.

Make sure the kids know not to interact with the guy. If you are the type of family that leaves the door unlocked to let the kids run freely (or whoever else is lazy), teach them to keep it locked and get them keys. Teach them to NOT go in other people's homes and mess with their stuff as they might get hurt for reason other than rightly deserving an ass-whuppin'.

But face it, without all the hyperbole and gossip, your real issue here is some dumbass had an ND that could have hurt someone. You do not reduce this risk by getting a bunch of folks worked up and trying to increase the risk of a confrontation. The very fact that the guy is making an effort to be scarce reduces the risk of anything further happening. Your best bet is to keep in touch with the rental office and ask if the guy is making a stink about his eviction. If the answer is no, then likely nothing will happen, and in 30 days he'll be gone.

One thing I would change is copping an attitude with the cops that if they don't do their job, you will. Cops don't like that, and in this situation you really aren't on legally sound ground to do anything. Broadcasting it to the cops if you plan to do anything ina legal grey areais just stupid and increases the risk that your family won't have you readily available to support them. On top of that, it ncreases the liklihood of something that IS jsutified may be legally more complex and financially more expensive.

So stop creating a liability, go over your family's behavior and reduce any liabilities they may introduce. THen sit back, relax, and accept the fact that you are well ahead of the curve for dying of old age (well really cancer or too many cheeseburgers, but we call it old age here) or a traffic accident than by some violent act.

I've got 'somewhat more than' six rifles in my humble little abode. Some are secured in the safe, others are not.

I've got a complete 1942 American 82nd Airborne Div uniform from helmet to wool socks. I have a 1944 German Fallshirmjäger uniform, (it was my great uncle's) it doesn't make me a Nazi, just a good conservator of family history. There's also two duffle bags full of late 70's to early 80's 82nd Abn and Special Forces memorabilia but those aren't of historical value.....yet

"...his firearms should have been locked up or put away, or something" , Well they were 'or something - they were secured behind locked doors of his domicile, away from the prying eyes and curious hands of the neighborhood tykes, right?

The neighbor had a negligent discharge, and yes, he Should have checked on his neighbors but so far no one knows the complete story. Once he returns, it can all be straightened out. Whether or not he gets evicted will depend on the terms of his lease.

My wife is an apartment community manager, a second floor residents friend did have a accidental firearm discharge into the floor and into the first floor apartment. No one was injured, police were called, report was made, the resident had 72 hours to vacate, even though it was an accident, no injury, and the person did not live there, the resident was still responsible for all activities that occur in their residence. Needless to say the first floor tenants were relieved to see them move out.

when i moved here 2 years ago, we were greeted by what seemed be quite, nice korean couple. his gf was cute little thing. 8 months went by thinking he was nice guy....

my ex neigbor turned out to be registered sex offender that sold kiddie porn to undercover agent.

Took local authority 8 months to notify us. and i had my nephew, and niece all the time while he was outside....

because he was not high level offender, immidiate notification was not required i guess.

he was later arrested for selling - guess what? - kiddie porn on internet...
