Is there a gun brand you just hate? One you wouldn't take a gun from at all?

Some of the ones I commonly see so many complaints about on various forums include: Taurus, Kimber, Hi Point, SCCY and Kahr...

Do you absolutely hate one of these brands, or some other brand?

I personally can't stand Taurus. I wouldn't want it if you gave it to me :p
I don't really hate them, but one gun I'd never own is a Glock.

To me, they (and clones) are an odd duck because of the grip angle. All my pistols have the same grip angle, and after years of familiarization, point with the sights aligned without any conscious effort.

No way would I ever change that.

I do have a Taurus TX22, and it has been fine, but it's not my favorite - so I gave it to my son.

Kimber. Never seen so many failures in a brand. Worst customer service.

Yea, I've owned one Kimber about 15 years ago. An aluminum framed model. Never again for me either....

The only kimber that I own (used to own three more) was an anniversary present from the wife @18 years ago. Since she got it; I won’t sell it like I did the others.

When I called kimber initially; it was about the premature slide lock issues (which I could easily fix myself) and the loose front sight. They said that I’d have to return it to them as they “use like a 20 ton press” for the sights. I also wanted the frame re-finished where the thumb safety (ambi) had already worn through the frame finish before i even shot it.

So I sent it back. They “adjusted“ the extractor (which then caused FTRB issues), refinished the frame, but put the same TS back in without any work at all; so when I got the gun back the finish was already worn through on the frame (again). They did OK with fixing the front sight, as when I got the gun back it didn’t wiggle around any more.

So, I “fixed“ it. I set the extractor tension properly, and replaced/fitted a new thumb safety (non-ambi, as this pistol had gotten knocked off safe several times; which I would find when I returned home), slide stop, hammer, hammer strut and strut pin, sear and disco, sear spring, hammer and sear pins. All replacement parts were non-MIM, by Wilson Combat, Cylinder and Slide, EGW, and Harrison Custom Design.

The little Ultra Carry CDP II was always accurate, but the work made it totally reliable, and all of the MIM parts in high stress positions were gone. I also replaced the rosewood stocks with some Amboyna Burl stocks made by Sarge (Ryan Payne) at The Finer Grain.

It’s now totally reliable, accurate, and quite attractive. That said; I still won’t carry it, because it’s a MIMber! 🤬

My only Kimber was a 9mm Stainless Target II 1911 I bought 2006. It was reliable and a good shooter but I sold it in 2014 after I splurged on a Les Baer. After that I started hearing that Kimber was fixated on cosmetics at the expense of reliability. I also remember the "Solo" a friend had that wouldn't go three rounds without jamming. I haven't considered any Kimber since.

Got to be the Glocks. Own one. Shot two others.

Groups aren't good at all.

Grip/frame, etc. is terrible for me. When I grip the gun like I'm going to shoot it my trigger finger is up on the side of the slide. I have to bend my trigger finger downwards at a heck of an uncomfortable angle to get it on the trigger.

And, being an old 1911 guy I just like thumb safeties. All my pistols have thumb safeties. Most have ambidextrous thumb safeties. I know a lot of people feel no need for a safety on a pistol and that's okay

Kalashnikov (& mfg's of AK clones).(n)

I know they operate and function mostly as designed, but I've had way too many utilized against me (and others).

Besides that, I'd say Glock for their ergonomics mostly. No thanks.

I don't hate them, but I've never found any Ruger with a trigger pull that suited me. They have all been "from Chicago to New York" long - and/or DA/SA with way too heavy an initial pull for me. I think they are fine guns, but I do not like them at all.

My list is pretty short, but I will never buy these 4 brands:

  • Hi-Point
  • SCCY
  • KelTec
  • Kahr
I know I've stated Glock in my previous post from Nov 30th this past year as a brand that I dislike (their egos fall behind other mfg's), but apparently the Gen 5s are improved and the MOS slides are available on more of their pistols. In particular, my FFL has "Blue Labeled" Glock 20 Gen 5 MOS for only $515 as opposed to the new FN 510 going for $1100. Both are (at least) 15+1 10mm striker-fired woods&hoods guns to compliment my M&P M2.0 4.6" 10mm blaster.

I do have to admit that Hi-Point, SCCY, Keltec, Kahr, Tisas, and others are certainly NOT on the Top 10 (or more) list...

I tried to like glocks (owned five all together; but they just don’t point instinctively like a 1911.

I also hate Taurus; though all had to go back for an indeterminate period, including the one that I still have. It’s a Judge PD which shoots the Federal Premium PP loads very well (fist sized group of 000 buck at 10 yards; POA=POI). If Smith had come out with their Governor back then, I’d have bought that instead.

I agree with the fact that Glocks have a totally different grip angle than 1911s, which is why I tend to shoot a bit higher than normal. If I were to get this one, I'm gonna have to install a red-dot to help out with my "programmed" natural PoA from using 1911s and similar.

I held off on the Taurus Judge and tracked down a Governor instead. Very wise choice on my part..;)

Turkish guns. Kimber. Taurus. Glock (grip size and angle, but still have a 19.5 for a truck gun).

If you haven't given those "I hate" guns a chance, at least to handle, if not to try on a range, why do you list them other than you don't like the low price or the previous reputation? I respect those who have valid reasons for not liking various guns - the Glock grip angle is a real point of "not like" for a lot of people.

Just wondering. One example from my own experience:

To all of you who are KelTec haters: I wanted one more brand of .22lr handgun for a range fun plinker. Didn't need - just wanted. I eliminated all the brands that "the guys" on the forums I belong to recommended, had and enjoyed. They just did not work for me for various reasons. That left only KelTec P17 that had any interest for me at all. I finally found one store that had one in stock. The grip was a good fit, the trigger was fine (not wonderful, but fine) and it pointed naturally for me. So for $200 (plus tax, etc.) what the heck. That little gun is a real SHOOTER! I even have a holster that works for it. And it comes with three (3) 16 round magazines, an adjustable rear sight and a tiny fiber optic front sight.

The only thing that was initially a bit of a challenge on the range is the fact that it weighs next to nothing, and at first I was flinching - maybe because of the super light weight of the gun in my hand? One of my friends who is a very good shot ran one magazine through it and was all over the paper. She shoots a Walther PDP-F and it is large and relatively heavy and she said my P17 was like "shooting a feather."

I know nothing about any other KelTec models, but I do know this one. There is not a thing wrong with it other than it looks weird with that flat bar as most of the slide, leaving 'ejection port' openings on both sides instead of just one side. Would I use it for my carry gun? At this point in my life I would not use any .22lr for a carry gun so that is a moot point.

My other .22's? S&W M&P .22 compact which I still recommend to others; and Browning 1911-22 which is very "pretty" and I like mostly because of the 1911 grip angle, but which does not shoot any better for me than the 'redheaded stepchild' KelTec. I also bought a Ruger Mark IV Lite but after way too much trouble with the magazines and having to spend another $200 on Volquartsen parts to make it shoot properly, I "divorced" it in disgust. Hubby is having a ball with it now, though.
