Hey guys (and gals), I have a CRKT M16-14SFA and a Kershaw Blur that need to be sharpened. The Blur is my mulitpurpose knife and the M16 is my defense knife. What would be the best way to go about that? I know squat about sharpening, as I have only attempted on some crappy knives and a sharpening stone back in the day. Should I see if there is some sort of sharpening service given by the manufacters? Or can I do just as good a job myself? If so, what would I need? Let me hear some helpful suggestions.

I find blade sharpening to be very relaxing and satisfying. Buy some good stones and go for it. Or, there may be a sharpening business in your town which services local chefs.

first, NEVER use your defense knife for anything but defense!

second, get a Lansky knife sharpening kit and some bandaids. Anybody can sharpen a knife with a Lansky, if you can read directions.

I am also a wood carver, and I have a really cool strop that is made from a 2X2 with leather glued on all four sides. It has different grades of compound on each side. After the Lansky, I strop the blade to remove the wire edge (burr) that exists at a microscopinc level.

My defense knife gets cleaned and oiled once a week. My "letter/box opener" gets sharpened at the same time.

The Lansky looks really nice. I would caution you about using a service. They usually do it with a motorized set up and may ruin the edge temper on a fine knife by overheating right at the edge you want to preserve.

Good sharpening should always be a hard Arkasas stone as the final finish. It takes a while at a 22.5 degree angle but will give an edge that will shave the hair on your arm.

Have patience and have fun.

I've heard a lot of good things on the Spyderco Sharpmaker. Any experience with it? While investigating all this knife stuff, I found that I might just have to get a Cold Steel Recon 1. Hmm. . .

Hmm. The CRKT M16-14SFA has a two stage edge. One at the front and the main run... Not to mention the serrations. I have found that unless you find a good shop that gives a crap you will usually get a crap job.

One of the sharpening setups should work fine (Lansky or whatever) Just remember to not take too much off. Most times a light clean up will do. Steel the edge and then strop may even be enough.

Patience and care are the two most important tools, stones and then the setup. 8)

The Spyderco sharpener is great. After I got one I put all my other stones away. It is well worth the $$$.

If you have some specialised blades that can't use a 40 degree edge you may need something else but I use it for every thing I have except the straight razor.

If the mods don't mind me linking to another forum, I basically asked the same questions over at 2Aforum. There are some really knowledgeable people who responded there, so please exploit that information to the fullest! (ps, you don't need to register to read, only to see pictures and PM people, etc)
