I was at the local gunshop today and handling the M&P 40 they have on display there and I noticed something when the magazine was out and slide closed... There's a gap right above the grip where you can see straight through from one side of the pistol to the other. This seems very unusual in automatic designs since it would allow the ingress of debris into the slide and magazine well. Is that normal? This is an MPM series gun I believe but I didn't look too close at the serial number. :?

Is the gap there to specifically allow crud to be ejected from the self-cleaning system? I don't think it would be there at all without S&W's intent.

Many Polymer guns have the same gap.......it's due to the segmented rails like a previous poster said. Completely normal and will not cause any malfunctions. If anything, it well allow the pistol to self clean it's rails of larger debris.
