Hello all! First post here.

I just sold my Glock 23 because I wanted to eliminate the .40 S&W from my arsenal and concentrate on the .45 ACP and 9mm. The 23 was the only .40 I had so I moved it. Now I'm going to buy a 9mm to fill the void in the safe. I always did like my glock 23, so the logical move would be to get a Glock 19. All my leather will work and the feel will be same. But...

I'm a big fan of Smith and Wesson handguns. I think I've got 7 revolvers and a 61 escort. There has been a lot in the print media lately about the M&P and when I finally got a chance to handle a full size 9mm I fell in love.

So the question is Glock 19 or M&P 9mm? Anyone got an opinion?

Thanks!

Welcome to the forum. You'll find a lot of good useful information here. To address your question, you are asking it on an M&P forum so the great majority of the answers you get will be in favor of the M&P. If you asked the same question on GlockTalk you would get entirely different answers. They are both fine guns. Compare them and decide which fill your needs better. The Glock is smaller and lighter and easier to conceal, and is a tried-and-proven product with a wide availibility of cheap parts and service. It is nearly indestructible. The M&P is a new product so doesn't have as large a track record as the Glock. It is more ergonomically desireable in my opinion....better grips (by far), better sights, a lifetime warranty and is well-liked by those who shoot them. It pretty much boils down to going with a newly designed product that appears to have major advantages over the Glock, or go with the gun that has been around for decades, conceals well, and will go "bang" every time you pull the trigger.

Well, as an owner of both guns, and the G19 was my primary carry for a while, I can tell you that once I get my S&W broken in, and run 100 or so rounds of carry ammo through it, I am going to the M&P. It feels so much better in my hand than any of my Glocks, and I LOVE Glocks.

I will post some pics showing size comparison in a few minutes.

I was in your same situation not too long ago. I spent a few months waffling back and forth between a G19 and MP9, thinking well the Glock has such a reputation for reliability BUT the M&P feels sooo much better in the hand. As you might guess i went with the M&P and don't regret my decision one bit. My pistol has been completely reliable, is more accurate than i can shoot (yet..) and just feels great. I'm biased for sure, but i say go S&W, you won't be disappointed.

Thanks for the replies so far!

I have to admit that I was leaning towards the M&P anyway, but my long history of carring the Glock 23 (14 years) keeps that Glock 19 close in the back of my mind.

I knew that the views here would be biased, and that's fine. I just like hearing what other people have to say. Any more opinions betweeen Glock 9mm's and M&P's? Keep 'em commin'.

I can tell you that all my Sigs, HK's and Glocks have become safe queens since I got my MP9. In fact I have sold off some guns just because I like the MP so much. Except the G19. I just can't put that sucker away. I shoot 80% MP and 20% G19. Its just that good a gun. Buy either, better yet buy both. Get the one you shoot the best if you can't afford both.

Here is a quick side by side.

Also, I didn't see it mentioned, but the G19 is 15+1 and the M&P 9 is 17+1 (stock of course) 8)

If it's a toss up go with the M&P just because The Glock will be the same old gun you always had. At least with an M&P it will be something new and exciting.

They are both good guns, so the one that you shoot the best and are most comfortable with should be the one you spend money on. Rent, beg or borrow both to see which fits you and your shooting style the best.

Personally, I would compare apples to apples - meaning I might compare a Glock 19 with a M&P 9c, or a Glock 17 with a M&P 9.

I personally would say the Glock is very comparable, but the M&P has the edge in ergonomics with the ability to change out the palm swell. I recently shoot the 40c and thought I shoot it very well if not better than my G23 the first time out for each.

I'm very impressed with the M&P and am considering adding one to my collection this year.

The glock 19 is almost the same exact size and class as the M&P 9 the 9c is closer to the glock 26 i think they are comparing apples to apples

I think comparing the G19 to the M&P is a valid comparison

The barrel's are about the same length, but the M&P has a longer grip for added capacity.

This could also make comparison to the G17 valid.

I would also compare it to the Steyr M9A1 as the barrel is about the same length.

Like some of the others have said, my M&P won because of the ergonomics of the gun, as well as it was made in USA. The Glock to me was #3, then #2 was the XD.

A very nice piece. As a matter of fact, the guy who verified my weapon today was a 9mm Glock shooter - he picked up my M&P and 10 ringed 5 shots.

BTW - are those scratches on the Glock from a kydex holster???

I'm an M&P and a Glock owner and I love both! I've been extremely impressed with my M&P and the way S&W has stepped up to the plate in getting this new platform up and rolling.

But, if I had to pick just one I would still pick my G19.

It's been stone reliable, parts and mags are readily available and cheap and holsters and accessories are in abundance.

I think the ergonomics of the M&P are superior but it will still be a while before it proves itself as a long-term reliable platform and the parts & accessories just aren't there yet. I'm willing to wait but if I could only have one at this time it would still be a Glock.

In short, I would recommend both. I have 2 of each. The first G19 I bought in 2000, the second in 2005. They have been fantastic. So far, the M&P's have been great as well and I would trust them. If not at the same time, I would recommend trying to get both eventually as I am confident you will enjoy both.

Let’s assume that they are equal in quality and performance. (They aren’t the M&P is much nicer, but let’s just assume)

The M&P is made here… 100% by American craftsmen; the Glock is not.

If that maters to you… glad I could help.. if not, so be it.
