I took my M&P9 to the range for a test run against my Glock 17. To keep things equal I fired 200 rounds out of each gun. Included in the 200 rounds was some Federal 115grn hollowpoint.

Reliability- Both ran without a hitch, not a bobble in 400 total rounds.

Grip- M&P wins, more comfortable.

Groups- M&P wins, shot tighter groups at 7 & 10 yards. M&P had stock sights/Glock Trijicon NS's I

liked the stock M&P sights.

Trigger- I have read complaints about the M&P triggers but mine is smooth and I liked it

Cleaning-Glock wins, the M&P comes apart just as easily with one more step (read complaints about how difficult it was, don't understand that). The Glock cleaned up a little faster for me.

Overall I am very happy with the M&P. I will not be selling my Glocks but another M&P is in the future. I only have one issue with the M&P and that is:

MAGAZINES: Smith & Wesson needs to 1.) Make them in Stainless and 2.) Find a way to reduce the cost and get them in production. Purchasing Glock mags is easy and can be done for at most $ 20.00 each. Not being able to find S&W Mags and then if you can having them cost $ 13.00 to 19.00 more per magazine is not going to sell guns for shooters who need up to 5 extra magazines.

Good comparison.

As a G17 & G19 owner I pretty much feel the same way you do. I've shot my M&P with a slightly better degree of accuracy as well and I like how quick my Glocks clean up. Also, I will not be selling off my Glocks but I think this M&P is a keeper!

Question for Glock owners...If someone was in the market for 2 guns would you recommend both? (for sake of argument: a M&P 9 & a G17) Provided that the difference in the grip wasn't a big deal.

Are you asking which I would recommend between a M&P9 and a G17?

Not necessarily, I'm asking would you buy both at the same time? or would you only buy M&P or G17. Both appear to be good guns, so if you had $1100 to buy 2 pistols would you get one of each?

Since they are so similar in size my first thought would be why would you want two similar handguns?

Granted the G17 is the flagship of reliability and what the M&P9 is aiming for so owning both would be

sort neat in the fact that you could shoot, test & compare both. If you have time for that sort of thing.

But in this case I would recommend the M&P9 and a G19 combo instead. The G19 can do everything the G17 can but is smaller and easier to conceal. It is also a pillar of reliability (with the exception of the 2183 followers). I love my G19 and shoot it in classes, IPSA, IDPA and for practice and plinking. I also carry it as my CCW. It's the only thing preventing me from carrying an M&P. For me the M&P9 is too large and the M&P9c is too small. The G19 is right in the middle, it's perfect.

I sold my G19 to switch to the M&P platform. I think I may have some comparison comments in my full size range review on this board.

I personally would rather keep my guns with the same grip angle so a Glock and M&P will not go together. The grip angle differences affect my muscle memory between a Glock and virtually anything else. YMMV.

In regards to magazines, the gun just came out a year ago. Glock has been out for 20 years. Give it some time.

Hi Matt,

Smith and Wesson mags have always been expensive. I just feel if S&W is going to go head to head with Glock cutting the price of mags might make the guns better sellers.

Yes, they have been pricey. Fortunately Mec-Gar makes most of their magazines and under the Mec-gar label they are cheaper. I don't know the details of the contract, but we will hopefully see the magazines under that label for the M&P in the future.

Just to point out, the Full Size M&P is closer to the G19 in size then the G17. There are pics floating around to better illustrate this. I'll see if I can find them...

I haven't seen the pictures but I do own G17s & G19s and by comparing them side by side I found the M&P is larger than the G19 but virtually identical to the G17. Maybe I should take some pictures

M&P and Glock sizes

M&P9 G17 G19 M&P9C G26

OAL 7.5 7.32 6.85 6.7 6.29

WIDTH 1.2 1.18 1.18 1.2 1.18

HEIGHT 5.5 5.43 5.00 4.3 4.17

WEIGHT 24 22.04 20.99 21.07 19.97

BBL Length 4.25 4.49 4.02 3.5 3.46

I look at the stats above and they are hard to believe. I don't have the M&P9c to compare but I do have all of the others. The M&P full size next to my Glock 17 is the same size except for the backstrap area at the tang. Width wise my M&P fits into a Glock 21 Kydex holster from uncle mikes. Personally, I think the great grip feel of the M&P causes one to think it is smaller than it really is.

Thanks for posting the specs 9mmdude, I was too tired and hadn't had enough coffee this morning to dig them up

One of the major reasons for my interest in the M&P was it's size relative to the G17. I love my G19s but I tend to want to run my full size G17s in training classes. However I don't like the G17 as much as my G19s. The M&P offers me a full size handgun that, so far, I seem to shoot very well.

I'm even thinking of buying another M&P9 and having Bowie or Burwell remove the beaver tail and round off the edges like Jester's specifically for carry and to make it closer in size to the G19. Because, like Matt said, I prefer to keep everything the same and if I continue to be impressed by the M&P I might have to start carrying one!

ClosetCase - I know what you're saying but you can't see the differences until you lay them on top of each other. The M&P9 is closer to the G17 (slightly larger actually) than it is to the G19. What is throwing you off is that the difference between the G17 and G19 isn't really much either.

When I first brought my M&P home I was very excited because I thought it was roughly the same size as my G19 but when I got everything out of the safe and started laying them all out side by side I saw the M&P is closer to the G17 than the G19.

Maybe I'll get some pictures of all three posted for future reference.

There are pictures of just that, the G19 laid over the M&P but I can't for the life of me find them. For what I remember, the difference was negligable, the beaver tail was the difference in length, and the grip was .5 inch longer.

That grip is what makes it seem so big.......but 16 rounds of .40 compared to the 23's 13 for an extra half inch seems worth it to me.

Slide to slide there's a good 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch difference between the G19 and the M&P. About the same between the G17 and G19 so you see my point; the M&P is closer to the G17 than the G19. The 1/2" plus another 1/2" for the beaver tail, the 1/2" on the grip and the four ounces make a slightly easier package to conceal which was my original point to LockNLoad.

However, I still think that with the right holster I could carry a full size M&P. Actually I hope I can because then I can buy another and send it off to Bowie or Burwell for some work

The OD G19 and M&P 9mm is of my M&P and old G19. Even with the G19 on top, etc. I have not found the M&P much bigger than the G19. It is pretty much in the middle between a 17 and 19 to me. I believe if you take out the beavertail length, it would be a more fair comparison when just looking at the numbers.

That said, I find that I am carrying my Compact the most.
