Errr...for the .40?

I thought concensus was they color coded grey for 9mm, black for .40

Nope. The followers for the compact 9s are gray. I have a full-sized mag with the improved follower. The cartridge sits closer to what it should have initially. The follower will still tilt forward with about six or seven rounds in it, but...

It's a relatively easy fix for the issue they are investigating, but to truly remove the phenomena will require tightening up tolerances on either (one or both depending on cost) the mag and follower to impede the follower tilting forward under load.

I witnessed an M&P 40 have issues immediately after the customer purchased it. The pistol would not feed properly when being shot. I stepped out to the range at his request and noticed the follower tilting which caused the round to hang up on the feed ramp. This is admittedly an EXTREME example and not at all common, but with tolerance stacking eventually one of these will appear. We switched mags and the problem went away.

S&W is rapidly addressing known issues and potential issues and I applaud them for it. Continual Development.

In ten year's time we may have actually caught up to Glock in LE and Public sales - who knows. I'm doing my part. I have two M&P 9s.

Hey could someone get a definitive word on this? I called Smith&Wesson (this is my second phone contact with them) and I wasn't that impressed with whoever it is that answers their customer support/sales. Its not a real big deal but the people that answer questions should at least be knowledgeable about their product line.

The first time I called I was trying to get the NSN for the specific model/options I wanted. I was told that the combo option I wanted didn't exist (Night sights w/ no mag safety or lock, full size MP40)...After explaining to the man it did indeed exists, and insisting it does because I know people with said options he went and get the RIGHT NSN...

Today I called asking about the mag followers... I was told that no change has been made. I told him (a different fellow then who I had spoken to in my first encounter with S&W) that indeed a change has been made to at least, the color. He put me on hold while he "asked around". When he came back he said that no change had been made and that if the colors have changed its, "probably because we switched magazine manufacturers"

Sigh..... Thus why I pose questions on forums, and not to customer support/sales.

I will say while stripping Gold Dots from one of my mags, I can get the last round's casing to actually hang on the magazine's foward most edge (running at 90 degrees to the casing's lip).

Now mind you, the force the spring drops the slide is easily 10x the force that I use to strip a round from the magazine by hand.

But, if they are switching designs there has to be a reason...

Look closer; much closer. Companies just don't spend money for the sake of spending money... That should be a clue. I know many don't wish to acknowledge anything in error with their prized possessions, but advances are made and updates are made to every tool known to man. Personally, if there are potential issues then by all means make adjustments to further mitigate the probability of those errors manifesting themselves. This is paramount for what I do with my M&P. Improving function is number one. Always.

997GT3,

I whole heartedly agree that improvements are for the best. All I am saying is that even with close inspection I don't see any differences between the two. Further, if they did in fact only change the color then it wouldn't cost them anything extra. I for one haven't had any problem with my mags but am completely open to anything that can improve any aspect of this bad boy. I guess only time will tell.

So you're saying I should put gray followers in all my mags?

There are more changes than just color. Look at the compact magazine versus your full sized ones and compare them. It's obvious that they are different. I have a full-size mag from S&W with the gray follower and, yes, it is different as I've stated.

GaryXD, I will be replacing the black followers with the gray ones.
