I ahve a xd and glock in 40 that I have extra barrels to convert to 9mm. Can the MP 40 be conveted with just a barrel and mag exchange?

Short answer: NO! The case head dimensions are very different between 9mm and .40 S&W. You'd need at least a new slide assembly (slide and barrel) plus magazines. At this point in time, S&W isn't selling slide assemblies. There are a few places making new barrels, but that doesn't solve your problem with the breech face dimensions on the slide.
Thanks for the reply. I have had no problems with my XD and Glock both in 40 with 9mm barrels and mags. Is there something about the MP that precludes caliber changing?

yeah...nobody is making conversion barrels yet.
You need a barrel with the O.D. = the .40 and a chamber for the 9mm!!
It would be pretty nice though

right now I am debating on getting the 40 or 9mm. I think will be just a matter of time till someone comes out with a conversion barrel.
either or will do brother.....

101 is biased.

Get the 45. It is like sex, but bigger then the real thing

Seriously, I love the 45... the 9mm is underpowered, but the 40 is a great compromise. Personally (and that is all that gun buying is... personal opinion), i'd go with the 40, but I already have the 45

Making up for something in the bedroom my friend......
a hole is a hole I have shot almost every caliber out there and can honestly say with some people there is an intimidation factor when firing a .45 which leads to unstable shot placement it all depends on youre level... (or in grimwulff's case the length )

Chooch,

I was waiting for you on that reply

Purely in a ballistics standpoint, the 45 packs more energy upon impact then a 9mm. Overall, the 45 has more stopping power then the 9mm, and is slower, therefore less worry of overpenetration in some situations.

Now, the arguement is that if you carry the proper bullets, the worry of overpenetration becomes negligble, due to the better diffusion of energy throughout the impact point. However, will someone (for this instance, generalization is necessary) always want to spend a lot of money on these hightech defensive rounds? You can't just assume everyone has the money to invest into a large cache of ammo, like you do Chooch

So the comparison is weighted, as is anything when you're comparing apples to oranges, but in total stopping power and energy, the 45 will beat out the 9mm.

I think everyone is.

I just like oranges, and I like to comment on how great the juice tastes, that is all

ETA: especially when someone asks how everyone's fruit tastes
iF I get a 40 and they have 9mm barrel then I get best of both world. The 45 is too big for me to handle

The use of those "high-tech defensive" rounds do not make the rounds more powerful. If anything, they make them less powerful (inhibit penetration). Yes, I have invested in a substantial cache of SD ammo but I am not a wealthy man. I have it now so it will be a long time before I have to buy more. You can get really good 9mm JHP for $18 (50 rounds). That's not much at all. "From a purely ballistic standpoint", 9mm is not even close to underpowered.

I was comparing it to the 45, if not directly, implicitly.

I agree that there is a ballistic difference between 9mm and .45, but to say that 9mm is underpowered is not a true statement.
