New Glock 42

I know... Sacrilege to talk about a new Glock on this forum :p

But, I have a Ruger LCP - 1st Gen. I really hate shooting that gun. But, it makes a good pocket gun. However, I am not a huge fan, but at least it is reliable. The LCP Max doesn't really interest me, though.

I started reading and watching reviews of the Glock 42. I rented it a couple of weeks ago. I rented it again today - then went and bought one.

I put 150 rounds thru the gun. I usually don't like Glock factory sights or the Glock grip angle. But on this little gun, the grip angle doesn't really effect me as much. And, I like the sights - especially compared to the LCP sights.

Anyway - gun is very accurate. I was surprised. Low recoil too. After shooting 150 rounds thru it, it took me a little while to adjust to 9mm again.

I picked up 1 extra mag for now, so I have 3. I was surprised how I could just rapid fire the entire mag and still do so well. I like this little gun.

It has its place. Will it replace my 9mms? No - But, I think I will start using it in place of the LCP

It choked on Fiocchi and WWB, and some other brand they had at the range.

The Fiocchi (supposed to be a great brand for 380s), I only shot 6 rounds of that brand (it was my last box to shoot), and it jammed on 3. I quit after the last one and just packed up for the day. I have had 2 trips with it so far. I think I am done with the gun.
Lately I've read a couple posts (not sure where) that Fiocchi was not working in various guns. Not at all. I've shot quite a bit of it in the past with no problems, but who knows if current production might not be good? And WWB is not noted for being great ammo.

Blazer brass is basic range fodder but has always worked well in any of my guns. Perhaps you might give it a try? You said it likes PMC also.

Maybe you can give it a rest and then try it again later? Maybe not, though. I know that I've had guns that just would not work for me no matter what I tried - even when others could shoot that particular gun. One notable one was that Kimber micro Raptor which was the most beautiful gun I've owned, but pretty is as pretty does and the gun hated me. After several range trips I gave up and put it for sale on consignment.

The Fiocchi I had was actually several years old - I had a box sitting in my safe for a while.

If the gun works with defensive rounds, that's all I need. So, I considered putting 250-300 rounds of self defense ammo thru it. If that worked 100%, then I suppose I'd be satisfied. But, that's just too expensive compared to what I paid for the gun. And, I may get 1/2 way thru, and then have it happen again.

I actually gave the gun to my son. He wanted it. He shot it a few rounds on my 1st trip. If he has issues too, then I'll send it back to Glock.

But I've lost faith in it. If I carry it, I'll always wonder if its gonna work. Too bad too, because I have seen nothing comparable to it in size in a striker fired gun. Oh well...

In 9MM the Winchester white box 115 grain is weak. Lots of "smoking" down the side of the brass where there's not enough pressure to expand the case against the chamber walls and seal the gas off towards the barrel. First time I shot some (100 round box) it was in my AR15 9MM carbine and the area around the ejection port was a dull black color with burned powder residue except where my fingers brushed against it. Didn't notice how dirty my fingers on the right had were (mag. release, closing the ejection port cover, etc. till I was done with it.

No ideas about Fiocchi .380 but I've heard of issues with it in 9MM on another forum. Failure to chamber on that forum due to inconsistent overall cartridge length.

Not familiar with Glocks (other than my M31) and I didn't realize yours was a .380.

Some of the guys on the CZ Forum really like their older CZ .380's (no longer made so I don't know about parts/mag. availability) but those guys sure do like them for their small size and reliability. Not recommending them, I've never even shot one. Just mentioning it if you feel like doing some research on them. All steel though, no idea how heavy they might be vs. the plastic framed guns.

Yea, it needs to be polymer because of the weight.

My Shield Plus with the 10 round mag is too big and too heavy for pocket carry.

In the 1990s, I had a Colt Pony. It was an all stainless 380 pistol. Man, that sucker was very heavy in the pocket. It repeatedly had an issue of peening where the slide stop met the slide. I had Colt replace the slide and then got rid of it. It was likely going to keep happening.

Anyway, I need something light.

The Sig 365 is too thick, and almost as heavy as the Shield Plus. But, I plan to rent one soon, and try it in my pocket holster to see what I think... After that, I give up. There is nothing else I see in that size that interests me.

I may look at a larger 380 gun,, though. I was impressed how easy it was to empty the mag on that Glock, and keep all rounds on target due to the lower recoil. It would be fun to have something larger than can do that. Although, granted... Then, it's no longer a pocket gun like the G42 is...

Hey there! Congrats on your new Glock 42! It's always exciting to add a new firearm to the collection, and it sounds like you made a great choice.

I understand what you mean about the Ruger LCP - it's a reliable pocket gun but not always the most enjoyable to shoot. It's great that the Glock 42 is accurate and has low recoil. And it's always a plus when a gun's factory sights are helpful! I also know a great place where I get parts for arms - see here. So, if something goes wrong, you know where to get the necessary details.

Ok, I have put more rounds thru this gun. And, I got it back from my son. I am satisfied with it now.

It will shoot PMC FMJ 100%. It will shoot Blazer Brass FMJ 100%. It will shoot Hydrashok and Critical Defense 100%. It will not shoot Fiocchi, WWB or 1776. If I stick to the PMC and Blazer 380, gun runs fine.

I am rather surprised about the WWB causing issues. It absolutely hates Fiocchi. I shot only 5 rounds of Fiocchi, and it jammed on 3 of them.

I got an LCP Max recently; and it’s worked out very well.
A friend had an LCP back in the day; and I shot it at the range. That was one awful experience!

My new Max has a tritium front sight, and high profile rear; nothing like the minimal sights on my LCP II. Anyway; it’s very manageable, even doing 10 round mag dumps.

I have an original LCP that works 100%, even though the trigger sucks.

I considered the LCP max, but on all the forums, there are so many problems people are having with the LCP Max. That scared me off.

I have had a Glock 42 since 2019 and the following ammo has been 100% reliable.
Winchester Service Grade 380 ACP Ammo 95 Grain FMJ
Speer Lawman 380 ACP Ammo 95 Grain TMJ
Federal Personal Defense 380 ACP 99 Grain HST JHP

I would send it to Glock for a once over. I have had many Glocks and never sent one back but I know some have had to do it.

I agree with you that for pocket carry there are not many options. The G42 or LCP II and I would caution you against the LCP II.
My brother in law had an LCP for many years and like many hated the trigger so he traded for the LCP II and raved about it. Against my better judgement I bought one as well. What a nightmare. I had many reliability issues with that pistol, frame pins would back out, dented casings, etc. 3 trips back to Ruger, never fixed and I asked them to give me a refund, which they obliged. They replaced the slide once and they sent a new pistol the second time.

Interesting to hear. I have come so close to getting an LCP2.

I've also seen way too many complaints online for the LCP Max.

If the gun keep running 100% on Blazer Brass and PMC FMJ, I'm not going to worry about it. But, if I have anymore issues, I do plan to send it back.

I hope to run some more rounds thru it this weekend.

Ok, I put 161 more rounds thru the G42 today. Worked great. I guess I just had to learn what brands of ammo to avoid.

That happens.

I typed that, knowing it's true, then was going to type about some example I knew of in my shooting. Came up with nothing for pistols, just for my M1A. My M1A was flawless for 20 plus years with a mix of US surplus ammo, a couple boxes of Winchester hunting ammo and uncounted numbers of reloads. Then I bought some SA surplus (South African 7.62X51.) Every magazine or so I'd get a jam where a piece of brass wouldn't clear the action area of the rifle and end up hung up with the next round the bolt was trying to feed/chamber. It does fine in the FAL, fine in the GII and fine in my youngest sons PolyTech M14 (semi auto M1A type rifle made in China). It's just my M1A that can't seem to handle that ammo.

That happens. It's a good thing when you figure that out at the range shooting paper targets.

Well, admittedly, I do not usually run into this in 9mm. But tiny guns are more finicky - especially these various small 380s. I've seen enough comments on this for various small 380s on Youtube. I'm just glad I have it figured out.

I really like this gun now :)

So far - 4 brands work (2 JHP brands and 2 FMJ brands), and 3 do not....
