New Slide Release and Night Sights **PICS UPDATE***

I received my M&P40 back from S&W yesterday afternoon (UPS Next Day Saver). I sent it out originally to get the slide stop replaced with the new "slide release" component. While they had it, I asked them to go ahead and install night sights too.

Boy oh boy....it's like a whole new gun now!! The slide release is still very subtle, but big enough now to get a good grip on it with your thumb to drop the slide.

The night sights are very nice too. Basically they're the Novak three-dot low mounts, but with the center of the white dots drilled out to insert the Trijicon cylinders. There's a nice, thick, white "circle" surrounding the green inserts that provide a fantastic sight picture for daylight use.

I missed having the M&P around while it was away at its makers. In its place, I kept my XD45 within reach. Now that my M&P is back, the XD has been put back in storage. I think I'm actually gonna sell the two XDs that I have.

Anyway, I thought I'd give a quick two-thumbs-up to S&W customer service!!

Here are some pics......

After a long day at the range, I come home to a bottle of Tums :) Sorry for kinda crappy pics, but I can barely use the camera. The dark one was the only way I could get the night sights to display......sorry 'bout the bad white balance....and the sideways view. I also needed to use the back of my Nextel i355 phone....since the battery cover is black, it helped show the front sight. The others should give ya's a good idea of how subtle the new slide *release* is. And that's my M6 attached.....I've had that since they used to cost about $450....now they're pennies....arrgh!

I just realized I didn't take pics of the extractor side of the gun to show the slide release over there......oops. But, it's the exact same size....100% ambi.

Could you please explain why you personally like the M&P more than the XD 45? I am going to get both the M&P 40 and xd45ACP but i dont know which one i want to buy first. Your experience with both guns can help my decision. Thanks.
Thanks for the pics! Loving the night sights!

Sorry about the my lack of response...I wasn't paying attention to the thread.....

Anyhow, I personally prefer my M&P40 over my XD45 for a couple of reasons...again, they're particular to me, but others may agree:

--Less perceived recoil

--A good, healthy, compromise between bulk of fullsize hi-cap 45acp gun and the power of the 40s&w round in a fullsize hi-cap gun

--Interchangable grips....some days I like the large grip (the large also additionally helps reduce recoil for me)

--Crisper out-of-box trigger

--No thumb knuckle-bite like I get from the XD (any XD for that matter)

--Above all, it just plain *feels* better in my hands

Hope that helps a bit. Good luck with your purchase, whatever it may be. Either way, I think you'll be happy. Both guns are good.

I'm lovin the night sights and the new slide release. So, from door to door, how long did it take to get it back?
Thanks for the pictures - worth a 1000 words.

The new slide release looks like a decent compromise, but I'm going to pass. I've had enough problems over the years with my thumb accidently engaging the slide release on a variety of pistols.

YMMV

Fred
I just got mine back with the extended slide stop. It's what should come on the gun. I have long fingers, and my thumb would have to be at least another half inch longer to even begin worrying about activating it.
New Slide Release & Night Sights

Do we have to send our gun back to the factory to get a better slide release?

What is the cost (the new release, shipping, handling, etc.)? I can live with the mag disconnect safety, but the slide stop (release) really is bad.
Buckeye49,

Not sure if they will sell them to everyone yet or not. I did manage to order some yesterday, so if they give you a hard time let me know. I don't know how much they are yet the salesman on the phone yesterday said they didn't have a price in the computer so I have to wait till they get here.

They don't have prices in the computer for other things related to the M&P either. I lost my medium and large palm swells, and the customer service department could not get me a price - nothing in the computer yet. So he just sent them to me! (I offered to pay at least the shipping, and he said "no sir, I am going to ship them to you for free." Now that is service!)

Yes....the gun must be sent back to them for "warranty" work. You should be able to get them to send you a return label first for a prepaid return.

Since it's warranty work, there is no cost to get the slide stop converted to the new slide release.

When you call, don't talk to sales.....talk to warranty/customer service.....they know what's going on.

S&W M&P new slide stop (release) and night sights

Thanks dougXD, I really appeciate your answer. I was hoping I didn't have to return it and wait weeks and weeks to get it back. But, if it is warranty work and cost me absolutely nothing (for parts, service, shipping to and from S&W), then I guess I should be happy and do it.

I will go look up the number and call and ask for warranty/customer service and see if I can get that shipping lable and instructions. Don't I have to ship it back to S&W through a Fed. Firearms Dealer?
nope, you can ship it overnight, and overnight only. UPS and fedex are ok with it. If your selling, you have to go FFL, but Smith is one, and they can send it back right to you(adult sig req). Get this... Then can even replace your pistol, if needed with another without going through your FFl. Kinda cool, I had an XD that was replaced like that.

JESTER:

Thanks, I appreciate your info. There is a gun nut (glock meister) that is our UPS man who delivers at the bank I work at. I can entrust it to him then, I guess, once I figure out how to send it. I think I have to call S&W and get them to okay me sending it in.

Any idea on how long it will take to get it back?

Buckeye,

They'll probably quote you a turnaround time of 6-8 weeks, but I would expect it back in two or thereabout. Mine took an extra bit of time because I had the night sights installed.

That said......depending on what's going on at the time regarding contracts and such, YMMV with respect to turnaround time. Expect the worst, hope for the best, I always say.

S&W M&P slide lock (release)

doubXD: Thanks, I called S&W yesterday from work. They are going to send me what I need to send the gun in for warranty work. And, if I understood the girl correctly, they pay for shipping both ways and insurance and it doesn't cost me a dime. She said would take about 2 weeks, unless they get real buzy with police work. Soon as I get what I need from S&W I am shipping it in to be channged out. In the pic I saw (I think on this forum), it looks about the same as the original slide-stop. Is the new one much easier to operate? The girl said the replacement slide stop is much larger?

Well, I'm of the opinion that the original "slide stop" was waaay to small. So, from my perspective, the new one is much bigger :)

Now, the reality of it is that the new "slide release" is just a hair bigger on the top of the component......just enough to get a nice solid grip with your thumb to drop the slide. It really truely is a subtle difference in shape, but it sure makes a huge difference in the performance of the gun......for me (to each, his own, right?).
S&W M&P Slide Stop (release)

dougXD:

Yes, in the pics, it does look like the top edge of the slide stop sticks out a little, with just enough semi-flat area to get a good touch of the thumb to use it as a slide release. I'm curious, does it work pretty easy now (with new new slide stop)?
S&W M&P pics - new slide stop & sights

dougXD:

I finally got the shipping lable to send via UPS to S&W for changing out the slide stop.

Just wondering, since I've never sent anything UPS (personal stuff); do I need to somehow insure the shipment for an extra amount? Looks like it is only covered for $100. I paid several hundred dollars for the gun and can't afford to have it lost.

I want to send it back UPS tomorrow. What did you do?
