I tell ya guys, every crazy in the Cedar Valley must have been out tonight.

I work for the Dept. of Public Safety where I go to school in northeast Iowa. I'm part of a unit of students that performs basic police functions to help supplement our small state certified police department. We're kinda the eyes and ears for the officers. I was walking a patrol beat on the southern half of our campus about 11:45 pm when we caught 3 kids smoking dope in the middle of a sidewalk in the heart of campus. I called it in to our dispatch and it resulted in two kids getting to spend the night in Black Hawk county jail. One of these bright young gentlemen was only 17, he's off to a great start in college. Class has only been in session for a week and he's already in trouble.

We only had 3 officers on duty tonight, but we were stopping intoxicated students right and left. At 3:30 am when I left, my unit alone accounted for the 3 arrests that had been made. We're not certified law enforcement officers, so we can't actually arrest anyone, but we can stop them and get their ID's and basically hold them up until and officer can arrive, and if needed, fit 'em with some shiny new bracelets. Another guy almost got his face planted into the carpet in the station by one of the officers, but don't worry, he would have deserved it.

Yeah, they're just a bunch of college students, but darn, some of them are just plain stupid.

I know this isn't the place for this but here goes. I don't wanna ruffle anyone's feathers but the only thing I see wrong here is that they were smoking in public. I don't smoke weed anymore because of drug testing at work, but I really don't see it as a drug. Yes I know my opinion does not matter to most people. I am a member of NORML ( national organization for reformed marijuana laws). I also know there are benefits to alot of medical patients. In my opinion liquor should be illegal and marijuana should not. You just don't see many cases of people on marijuana slamming there cars into innocent people and killing families. Stoners are not out commiting armed robberies for money for more drugs, or beating their wives and family. The only reason the government won't legalize it is that they won't be able to tax it as it can be grown at home and not being able to tax it is a big no no for the government. I think liquor is a more dangerous substance, thats why I don't drink. There are many sick people who are sick and can benefit from it. We can debate this until we are blue in the face and get nowhere. Sorry, I'm not trying to hijack you thread but I can't help myself when ever I hear someone giving marijuana a bad name. Yes i do think it is wrong for them smoking on school property, and yes I do think they are too young to be smoking. I do not think it is wrong for a responsible adult to make their own choice to smoke. I know you won't admit to it but how many people, including police officers and other law enforcement agents have had a drink or two or taken perscrition meds and gotten behind the wheel of a vehicle and driven endangering other peoples lives? Mods feel free to delete this if you wish.

I know how it goes. I worked for the University of Minnesota Police department while going to school there. I did campus escorting and ended up a supervisor of the security department. It is always very busy the first couple of weeks of school with drunk idiots.

Have fun with the job.

Mrgrinch...here's my thoughts on the whole situation, marijuana is illegal under the laws that I'm employed to help enforce, therefore, anyone smoking it is in the wrong and is subject to the penalties. Now, I'm not going to get into my thoughts on the legalization of marijuana, but if the gov't ever changes it's mind and legalizes it, then I won't worry about it.

PantherMan,

It's the same story at the Military training bases. You have a bunch of KIDS who have just found freedom.

Either from overbearing parents or their surrogate Mommies (DIs) and some (most) of them truly do not know how to handle it.

On the other side of the same coin, especially in the military, are the ones who have never had any other concerned authority and this is their first chance to rebel against anything.

When you take away the only vestige of authority (oppression in their eyes) you get a bunch of hell raisers who have zero concept of the long term consequences of their actions.

I am very fortunate that a very wise(and very large) DI recognized that I was out of control and "counseled" me privately instead of bringing me up on charges under the UCMJ. He, quite literally, saved my life.

It is very difficult to tell the difference between someone who just doesn't give a damn and someone who just doesn't know what he's doing.

$0.02

I'm off my soap box now.

luvmy40, here's the low down on what happens when we run into narcotics. We're not allowed to make contact with the subjects because we aren't certified law enforcement officers. What our procedure is is to radio it in to dispatch and then try to stay within visual range of them until the officers can arrive. Once the officers arrive it's up to their discretion. In this instance, they were being a couple of little [email protected], and that's never a good thing to do with the cops. So it's really not in my hands. But I understand what you're saying. If I had the power to simply confiscate the controlled substance in question, I would, and then just give them a slap on the wrist and send them on their way.

Until this thread I was worried I would have to bust out the dreaded Mall Ninja reference. LOL

PantherMan,

I wasn't criticising. Just spouting.

I know that you can't, and shouldnt have to baby sit for any one. I'm sure the local/university LEO need and appreciate your work.

Good luck.

Oh I know all too well where Sterling is, been there more than a few times. PM me sometime, maybe we could head out to Black Hawk park and hit the range...assuming it's not underwater...

Yeah, there's one just north of town, but it's right next to the river and with all the rain we've had lately I think it's flooded. I think there's also one at Hawkeye, but I've never been there before, and the one at Black Hawk is free.
