I don't open carry either (I live in Pittsburgh too) because I'm just not comfortable doing so. I have read about a few people in this area, and numerous others across the state doing so (including Philly), and just wanted to see if anyone here does so.
I just found it misleading how a couple of years ago, I had a conversation with a sheriff from another county (whom I somewhat know and had spoken with about Pennsylvania's laws concerning concealed carry); he specifically stated that "concealed means concealed, you can go to jail if your gun comes into public view." I took this to heart which in turn dissuaded me from applying for my PA license to carry at the time. Now that I have become more comfortable with concealing a firearm and gotten my LTCF, I have been researching some of the laws further, and the topic of OC had come up.
Basically, I was lied to about the laws in PA concerning carrying a firearm, and was just a little surprised on how I was mislead by a person who is supposed to uphold the law. I understand he may have done so because he was either ignorant of this area of the law (doubtful since he is responsible for issuing LTCFs), or because he knew that most of the John Q. Publics would over-react to knowing that another citizen may be armed, leading to unnecessary police calls, etc...
I guess I was just taken by surprise a little regarding open carrying a firearm...and the fact that there does not exist any such law in PA regarding brandishing, as long as it can not be construed as a personal threat or intimidation tactic.
$0.02 of new found wisdom that I wanted to get some more insight on. Kind of makes you wonder how else people are mislead on a day to day basis when it comes to some "laws."
