This is more of a question for Mr Burwell, but if anyone here has tried it, I'll take any info I can get. Obviously the guide rails on the triger and sear blocks started out black and that wears off with use.

Would there be any real functional improvement if I just polished the heck out of them to get rid of the black and gave them a mirror shine?

I can be 100% sure when I tell you that its a waste of time, and could even increase slide-rail play.

There is very little contact between slide and those rails anyway, and any rail "smoothing up" will come from the normal operation and break in from shooting the pistol.

Let the pistol smooth up what it wants to smooth up.

LEAVE THE RAILS ALONE! All you're going to do by polishing is loosen up the tolerance b/w slide and rails. Just lube the rail cuts in the slide re-assemble the pistol. HTH.
