The recoil spring has to strike a balance between being too soft and too hard, too soft and recoil batters the pistol frame, to hard and you have extraction and ejection problems. Aftermarket recoil springs are available for users that consistently shoot lower powered ammo or higher powered ammo, selection of the proper strength of spring is important.
For 99%+ of users the factory standard spring is the way to go, after 5,000 or more rounds it can become softer than needed and may need replacement, and for most people the best replacement is the standard strength, whether the spring comes from S&W or an aftermarket spring from Wolff.
