Safes and security

What do you guys use to lock up your guns?

I have a large safe. But, I also used to keep a Gunvault, 1 pistol, quick access safe by my bed. I was on my 3rd Gunvault, however. They have a flaw in the locking mechanism, and over time, the steel cable inside that mechanism will wear and break (this doesn't happen if you use the key).

This used to get discussed on the gun forums a lot, but now there are a lot more choices for these quick entry, 1 pistol safes. So, you don't see the topic come up much anymore... Gunvault used to be the only game in town.

I've had 2 of their safe's break that cable, and was on my 3rd one. Gunvault replaced 1 under warranty, but denied the other one. I honestly rarely used the current one, because itw as getting old, and I knew the days were numbered....

After the cable breaks, you can only open it with a key. And, I always worried that it would break the day I would need the gun. Granted, it will take some time before it breaks. But, it WILL break one day. It all depends on how often you open it up...

Anyway, I finally just threw away the 3rd Gunvault, and I replaced it with my 2nd Wyze Gunsafe. My 2nd one just came in today...

I've had my 1st Wyze gunsafe for about 6 months. I like that it opens 4 different ways... Key, combo, finger print, or thru the app on your phone (you must enter a code in the app to get it open). The finger print reader works well too.... I really like this little safe....

What do you guys use?

I have a large safe for long guns, documents and ammo downstairs and a Cabelas digital handgun safe to keep the house pistol away from the kids.

BTW, the Cabelas digital handgun safe is a good value for the money compared to other pistol safes in the price range, under $100

I have a large safe as well. Pretty much stores everything that doesn't get carried. I have a Fort Knox Original Pistol Box on the nightstand. I started with a GunValult as well and I gave up on it after it had to be completely replaced once. Sold it and moved on. Been eying the offerings from Vaultek - the local shop close to me is a dealer so very tempting.

I looked at Vaultek too, before I bought the 2nd Wyze safe. Looks like they make good stuff.

I hadn't seen the Wyze safes - I'll take a look.

Just my opinion on Wyze products. I have Wyze cameras, 12 of them. The cameras work fairly well but they have had intermittent issues that I had to resolve on my own as Wyze support is practically nonexistent.

Rather than fix the existing products they come out with new products. Frankly, there are no products they make other than the V3 cameras that I would buy and that's because I can fix them myself.

Others may be of another opinion and that's fine. But to trust Wyze with a gun safe that I would need to work immediately in a crisis is not a chance in hell I would take.

Well, I have 8 Wyze Cameras, and have zero issues with them.

I previously used Arlo cams at the condo I owned. I had a lot of headaches with them. When I moved into my apartment, the router is on the ceiling. I could no longer connect the Arlo hub to the router.

So, I sold them and went all in on Wyze. They work amazing. I pay the yearly fee for the recording. I also bought a Wyze air filter a few months ago. It works great. Much better than my previous HEPA filter.

And, I have owned my 1st Wyze safe over 6 months. Been super happy with it. I needed a 2nd small pistol safe last week. I looked at all the brands and the prices. Since the 1st Wyze safe has worked so well, I went with #2.

So, I have had the opposite experience as you. Sorry you have had so many issues. But every company has occasional issues.

Have one big safe and two Vaultek safes. One on nightstand and one next to me in family room.

I have an old-style gun cabinet; wood and a lot of glass in the door; but the door and one of the drawers locks. I also have a small safe that I bought before the first grandkid was born, to have someplace to gather up and store the guns that live in different places throughout the house.

Let me clarify. My gripe isn't with the product per se, but with the Wyze firmware/software updates. I also wouldn't
want any app to have access to my gun safe.

There are no kids in my home so having a handgun safe by my bed or elsewhere in my home is not an issue. When visitors are coming by, if they have kids including teenagers, my guns are secured in the master gun safe. I also request visitors with kids call first, and not drop in unannounced.

Well, the safe and app are not on wifi. It works via bluetooth. And if you don't open the safe icon within the Wyze program, there is no connection. When you enter it, it then downloads all the times you have open and closed it since the last time you opened that part of the app.

There is also an additional code within the program to access the safe. So, it is no different than the key code on the safe itself.

So, even if someone knows your master phone unlock code on your phone, they still cannot open the safe without the separate code in the Wyze app.

I like the app more than some other brands that use an RFID bracelet to open the safe. This is safer, IMHO. Anyone can get that RFID device.

Honestly, I don't even use the app other than to go into the safe settings to see how much battery life is left. That is very convenient. So, you know when to change the batteries.

No problem. I was very surprised at how much I like the 1st one. I threw away my old Gunvault (which was my 3rd one, because the other 2 broke) when I ordered this 2nd Wzye safe.

I still have the original batteries in my safe, and they’re still working.
It’s probably been 11+ years now; I guess I should try to remember to change them. 😳

I have two safes for long guns, most handguns, and documents (I am documented 😉). We no longer have kids in the house, so my nightstand gun lives in a somewhat decorative hinged, unlocked box. Next to the box is a spare mag, flashlight, and phone.

I also leave the safe in my closet unlocked and open whenever we are home - including when asleep. Rifles, a shotty, additional loaded handguns, and more than enough ammo are quick and easy to grab.

I might add that Gunvault safes pretty much suck. Had the cable that opens lock break and the key lock is pretty cheap, very easy to break into. Just Google it. Their CS also sucks.
