Shield plus carbon on red dot lens

Hey Guys,

Finally got my Holosun 507K on my shield plus optic ready any how the issue I am having is the hole that is for the visual load indicator gas is coming out and after only 20-30 rounds the lens is filthy with whatever and I can no longer see the dot so I the only solution I can think of is to find a barrel that doesn't have the notch do you know of any (everything I have found so far has the notch) or is there another solution.

A couple of things I took my EPS carry of another gun mounted it the shield plus same thing also I have tried three different ammo Hornady critical duty, critical defense and Federals HST not difference as far as I can tell.

Thanks,

BTH

That's the loaded chamber indicator. All the M&P's either have that or a sort of lever/spring unit (similar to the XD/XDM pistols) that sticks up in the front to let you know you have a round in the chamber.

A lot of times when a pistol gets dirty real quick in that area it's low powered/low pressure ammo. The ammo you're using doesn't sound like low pressure ammo.

I've never had that issue (lens getting that dirty, that quick). Maybe another member on the forum here would be more help than me.

One suggestion might be to keep trying ammo in the hopes something will seal better around the case walls (pressure expands the case walls and seals them against the barrel/chamber walls to prevent/minimize gas blowing back towards you/the red dot. The ammo you're using should be pretty decent pressure wise.

You might also contact S&W Customer Service and tell them about the problem if no one here can help you with it.

They all get dirty (lens, lights, etc. from firing but yours seems to be happening faster. I usually use my t-shirt to wipe the lens off. Or the little lens cleaning cloth that comes in the Holosun box with the optic.

Buy a lens cleaner called Cat Crap. It helps to prevent fogging. I have been using it when I shoot my M&P pistols with optics and I have no issue seeing my dot. I am able to shoot a couple of hundred rounds without issues seeing my dot.

Rangerman, thanks for the help.

I just looked up Cat Crap lens cleaner on Amazon and even they sell it. Paste or pump spray bottles.

I recently started wearing some expensive eye glasses. I just ordered pump spray bottle of Cat Crap and some lens cleaning cloths from Amazon. I'll try it out on my glasses and the Holosuns when it comes in.
On the advice of a LEO friend, I bought the Lens Pen Law Enforcement Kit which has everything you need to keep your red dot clean and fog free. It works great and there are no fluids involved as they are made to keep very expensive camera lenses clean and scratch free. I've had it for years now and it's a perfect solution for my red dots. Just throw it in your range bag or wear it on your belt. Just follow the instructions for quick and easy cleaning. Here's a link: LensPen® Outdoor Pro Kit for Law Enforcement
Both my full size M&P 2.0 and Shield Plus do smoke the red dots (a 507C and a 407k) lenses a bit after many rounds (like 200) but not nearly as bad as what you describe and I've never come close to not being able to see the dot. I wonder if the chamber of your pistol is a bit oversize so the brass doesn't seal it as well as it should.
Hey guys after reading the first couple of post I realize I made a couple of mistakes one when I tried the factory ammo it was after I had fired a couple of magazines of reloads which I realize the reloaded brass was very old. So I clean the lens went out with a just factory stuff and the lens stay a lot cleaner. Sometimes it takes a different set of eyes looking at a problem which in case it was you guys.

Thanks again for all your help greatly appreciated and I am going to try the cat crap also.

Take Care and stay safe.

Join the club, buddy. I do that stuff way to often to suit me. It has really helped me to write stuff down on the targets while I'm at the range. When I come home I'll go through my targets, think about them and what was going on and write up a range report. And still I get something wrong or leave something out sometimes.

PS. Got my order of cat crap and lens cleaning cloths in the other day but haven't gone to the range to try them out. Darn knees are giving me fits and I've not wanted to test them on that hill I'll have to walk down and back up between the parking lot and the ranges.
Glad to hear that things are better for you!
