Shield sight upgrade

I decided the red fiber optic sight on my Shield Plus was too bright for my liking. In bright
light, it distracts from the front sight. I used a sight pusher to swap it out for a Dawson Precision
plain black rear sight, .245" tall with a .145" notch.

Cool. Make it like you like it.

With my older eyes, I like the red in the back. But, I do have other guns with all black on the rear sight too

Thats pretty nice. Was the rear sight hard to remove? I noticed it has a set screw. The front sight on my shield was a BEAR to move.

A good sight pusher will move the rear sight pretty easily after you loosen the set screw. The front sights not as easy to move The most recent sight install I did used the sight pusher for the rear sights and brass punch and hammer on the front sights.

The aggravation comes in when you go too far (sights move in left to right if you're looking from the rear of the slide) and then have to move it back the other way. When I install new sights I usually take the sight pusher tool to the range with me next trip in case I have to move that rear sight.

Thanks. S&W says to adjust windage with the front sight on the shield, so Ive never touched the rear sight. I noticed the set screw, so it had me wondering.

Hmm. The front sight. That's now what I'd have thought, but follow their lead/instructions. They must have a reason.

Ya, it's definitely unconventional. I don't know why either.

I always thought you centered the front sight, and moved the rear (if needed)...

Thats standard procedure on every other pistol Ive ever owned.

I think its because the rear sight holds the striker safety in the slide. (my best guess, I cant see any other reason)
(in Glocks for example, the striker safety is removed from the bottom of the slide whereas in the shield it is removed through the top of the slide, but the rear sight has to be removed to allow that)

I guess I should have consulted my manual. I used a sight pushing tool to drift the rear sight. It was very tight, but it did move. Never imagined that S&W would recommend adjusting the front sight.
