First post so I would like to say hello to all. I bought a M&P 9MM yesterday (7 day waiting period). I am a member of AR15.com and went to their S&W forum and there is some confusion as to when the slide locks back on the last shot will inserting a new mag automatically

release the slide and load a round? Thanks in advance.

On my M&P40, I haft to slam in the new mag in order for the slide to release on its own. But most of the time I dont insert a new mag that hard.
It's not supposed to, but the energy transferred will sometimes throw the slide.
I had a Ruger P90 that did the pretty regularly... Then one day I did it, the slide moved forward , chambered a round and it fired a round into the ceiling of the range...

It got traded in that afternoon.

It fired without a finger on the trigger?
Yep

That would be my reaction.
When I slam the mag in, It has to be pretty hard. Im not worried about it. If I have to slam it in that hard then I might need it to slide foward on its own, because im in trouble.
Mine shuts on a fresh mag but only after a last-shot. It doesn't have to be slammed, but "positively" inserted. Doing it slowly or weakly won't trip the slide. It's VERY fast for a reload this way, so I dig it.
I tested mine out. .40 with a variety of mags with what appears to be a varying ammount of spring strength.

In general, it will return to battery from slide lock when you insert a mag firmly with 15 rounds down to about 12 rounds. 11 rounds to about 8 rounds you had to slam it a bit. From 7 to 4 you have to really slam it. Below four, it gets pot luck unless you start slamming it in there hard enough to give you a nasty blood blister if you pinch anything.
I didn't fully test mine, but when I was shooting my M&P .40 for the first time (350 rounds, 5 different mags, all filled to 15) I did not experience my slide unlock and close one time.

I may not have been slamming it hard enough, but I had read this thread before and tried a couple times. I'll give it another try this weekend at the range. I want mine to be ready to go if i have to slam a mag in.
If you read the manual, it clearly states that if you insert the magazine hard enough, this MAY happen... and they warn against it.

Yep, Picked up my M&P 9MM yesterday and as always fondled the pistol for awile and then read the manual cover to cover a couple of times. Said just what KI4LIV stated.

Of course, I didn't read that until after having already shot it
Yep - I'm a male alright !

I ran across it while looking up how to break the gun down for cleaning.

I finally got around to shooting my 9mm this past weekend. I did a quick mag change and had my slide slam closed too. I didn't think twice about it because my Glocks & 1911's have done the same thing. Of course i was making sure I had it seated but not doing it so hard that I sent my gun half way across the state. lol It only did it the one time though.
Quite often this is caused by shooters who partially insert the magazine, remove the hand, "here's the windup.......and here's the pitch!!", thus hitting the magazine into place. Some of that energy gets transferred to the frame giving it some inertia. That inertia of the frame allows it to move in relation to the slide, allowing the slide stop lever to disengage and then the slide goes forward to (most often) chamber a round.

It helps if you cup the palm a bit, which seems most common. Then your hand seats the magazine and is able to strike the frame. Don't cup it too much or it won't seat the magazine. Too flat a hand results in a seated magazine but the slide not releasing (except sometimes).

I have seen the following take place with this technique:

Pistol loads as slide goes forward on a locked in magazine. Pistol can be fired normally.

Pistol fails to load (empty chamber) as the slide releases just before/as the magazine is seating.

Pistol loads as slide goes forward on a partially seated magazine, which falls to the ground as the first shot is fired.

Pistol fails to load as the slide does not release, often resulting in repeated beating on the bottom of the magazine.

Pistol fails to load as the slide does not release, nor is the magazine fully seated and thus falls to the ground.

The above situations are brought to us, courtesy of an agency who teaches this as a feature. We encourage our students to equate insertion of a magazine with a full manual operation of the slide, regardless of the status of the slide or anything it might do while loading. In other words, we don't count on the slide falling while loading, to load the pistol. Experience has shown that occasionally it will not mean your pistol is loaded. A bad score on the range, but potentially fatal in a defensive situation.

My 229R DAK won't release at all. The Glock 17, 18, 19, etc. will do it with a good "slam" on the rear portion of the frame, and seldom do it when intentionally striking the forward part of the frame at the front edge of the magazine well. This also happened with a Sigma T&E gun and a S&W 990L. I still hope to try it with an M&P, although factory reps are conspicuously absent.

That's great. Palm your unsafe gun off on some unsuspecting buyer and let him hurt somebody.
