Doctors:

(A) The number of doctors in the U.S. is 700,000

(B) Accidental deaths caused by physicians per year are 120,000

© Accidental deaths per physician is 17.14%

Statistics courtesy of the U.S. Dept. Of Health & Human Services

Guns:

(A) The number of gun owners in the U.S. Is 80,000,000 (yes that is

80 million)

(B) The number of accidental gun deaths per year, all age groups,

is 1,500

© The number of accidental deaths per gun owner is 0.001875%.

Statistics courtesy of the FBI

So statistically, doctors are approximately 9,000 times more

dangerous than gun owners are. Remember, guns do not kill people,

doctors do.

FACT: NOT EVERYONE HAS A GUN, BUT ALMOST EVERYONE HAS AT LEAST ONE

DOCTOR

Please alert your friends to this alarming threat. We must ban

doctors before this gets completely Out of hand! Out of concern for

the public at large, I have withheld Statistics on lawyers for fear

the shock would cause people to panic and seek medical attention.

How many people per day are treated by doctors? How many medical treatments total per year?

How many people per day are shooting firearms? How many shooting outings total per year?

Those statistics are not really displaying the data as it should be.

I think this was meant as a comment on the antis twisting facts and stats to further their ultra liberal agenda. IE disarming any who would oppose them.

Actually it is probably a better match than you would think.

Most medical misadventure that involves a health care professional occurs in a hospital. THe hospital might be considered analogous to the shooting range. Doctors causing medical misadventure outside the hospital might be analogous to home defense, firearms maintenance accidents, etc.

As an absolute rate doctors probably are invovled in a lot more deaths than guns. However, it isn't damning doctors so much as it underscores how poorly the average person does risk assesment.

guns are the mechanism of about 28,000 deaths a year. About 60% are suicides, and suicide rates are fiarly independant of gun control laws. Of the other 11,200 nobody ever bothers to weigh them against even the MOST conservative estimates of defensive firearms use, which comes from the FBI. It puts defensive use of firearms at over 80,000 a year. Odds taht a firearm will cause your death if you aren't suicidal or doing something that justifies killing you is about 1 in 25,000.

Your odds of dying from a coronary incident due to lifestyle choices is MUCH higher. FRom commuting to work? much higher. etc.

Fell flat on back on steel stairs 10 mos ago at work. x-rays show chips on spine. Doc said he saw no other damage so take these pills and do these stretches. I am still in pain every day so I pushed the issue with workman comp. So 10 weeks later I am now getting an MRI. Im a little worried but I hear they got some new ways to fix things.

Actually, it's not.

There are way too many variables in the statistics of the original post. There are several problems as well.

One big problem is trying to do a direct comparison of two values that are not comparable. (apples to oranges).

If you are going to use the total number of gun owners, the original poster used 80,000,000; then you need to use the number of total patients.

If you figure a death rate per gun owner, then you need to figure a death rate per patient.

Yes, the antis twist their facts to further their agenda. Almost any organization with political involvement does this.

And most sheeple that read or hear misleading information/statistics believe it...

I like the new Mountain Dew commercial were a young couple are being chased through the woods by a masked ferret wielding a chain saw. The point is, more people report being attacked m=by ferrets than grizzly bears. Another Useless Bit of Information (UBI) for you...

Maybe you can shed some light for me then I have 3 herniated discs, 2 narrowed disc space, no fluid in one disc (that is all lower back) and towards the middle I have a compression fracture. I just recieved my 2nd cortizone shot today. Now that I am finally away from army docs (I think Morgan can vouch for that) I am finally getting somewhat treated I was told that surgery is definitly in my near future the only reason they are doing the shots is the are prolonging surgery. Back surgery as a 26 year old scares me like the boogie monster for my daughter. How long if any help are these cortizone shots supposed to last??? any medical advice would be greatly appreciated if u want to pm me or whatever Thanx-Jason

Surgery is always the last resort. Of course you want to give the body time to heal itself in all matters and sometimes a "wait and see" approach is always best. Cortizone shots are not completely healing. The main purpose of such shots is just to reduce inflammation. The specific action of steriods is to inhibit the action of so called leukotrienes that contribute to inflammation and the recruitment of inflammatory cells to the site of injury. They do also help dissolve scar tissue and speed in the healing process but with injuries as extensive as your sound to be, surgery is obviously going to be the best option. Concievably you could recieve cortisone shots for a long time. There have been studies that show there is no advrerse affects for prolonged cortisone shots besides some tendon fragility and fluctuating insulin levels.

Surgery will reduce or alleviate your pain and put your spine back into a stable position. Although scary, the US has the best back surgeons in the world and there is nothing to be scared of besides setting off metal detectors in the future! I believe there are some guys on the forum who have some plates in their backs or fused joints.

The compression fracture might just take time to heal and that could take up to a year at times but the other injuries might be fixed with surgery. I hope the best for you and just remember, if the doctors are explaining all this or giving you every option, they are not doing their job.

CMD BASS THANX

I really appreciate you taking the time to answer me another aspect of this is I belong to the government so instead of expensive surgery and long recovery time they will probably medically discharge me and have the va deal with me. because of this I will be medically nondeployable here pretty soon (my guess) and then I am useless to the government with 5 years in they have to look at it from the money aspect. Thanks again and good luck we need some real doctors out there-Jason
