Stippling

Hey guys, recently I took some sandpaper to my Shield Plus because the texture was scraping me up pretty good during concealed carry. I lIke the feel of the grip now (maybe a 1/10 or 2/10 aggressiveness, and can actually shoot it well but want to reintroduce a bit more texturing. I have considered Hogue, or Talon (Pro Texture), but wanted to see if anyone know a good company for Stippling that was not too aggressive. Thanks for the feedback!

I wear an undershirt; so firearm finish has no impact on my comfort.
That said; an even better result is that my body has no impact on my firearm finish.
My perspiration is only slightly less corrosive than battery acid…

Yea, I just have a piece of inner tube on there now. I live in Florida so usually no undershirt being that it’s crazy hot most of the year.

I live on the water in SW Florida, and grew up down here well before there was in-home air conditioning. No A/C in my schools (including high school) either.

Wearing an undershirt actually keeps you cooler.
I know that seems counter-intuitive; but some old-timers set me straight on that many years ago, and they were right. 👍

I have a TTI Combat Master. The stippling is amazing. It is my favorite. But yea, they are not cheap. I am waiting on a 2nd Combat Master to come in that I shipped to them 13 months ago. Their stippling is not that rough, but I also have not tried carrying the G34.

Also, be aware that on Glocks - they do a carry stipple. They ONLY do stippling on the front and back straps - so it doesn't irritate you when the gun is carried. As the Shield ALREADY has this texturing that you find too rough - that isn't going to be a solution IMHO.

But honestly - if you think the existing texture on the gun is too rough to carry - ANY stippling is going to be rough on you when you carry. I don't think this is the solution you want - and once it is done, you are stuck.

I would just put a Hogue Jr on the gun and call it a day. I have one on all 3 of mine, after I tried carrying my first one - and I couldn't deal with the texturing either. This solved my problem 100%. And, the little texturing area on the 13 round mags don't bother me at all.

M&P Shield - Grips for Smith & Wesson - Handgun Grips - Hogue Products
Hogue costs $15 for either the stick on or wrap around
Never tried a Hogue on a M&P before myself...
In around 1986-87 I came up with the idea for a rubber grip = the bicycle inner tube
I worked next to a Schwinn Shop & they had many different ones in their scrap pile & I knew a guy who worked there
Made the 1st one for a local LEO with a Glock 17 Gen 1 when I managed an import auto parts store
Long before Hogue or Pachmayr made any
Found a mountain bikes tube worked the best = easier to install & was thicker too!

I have an innertube on my Glock 19. I cannot stretch a Hogue Jr over the magwell, and I hate the fullsize Hogue Handall (I only like the Jr version - and it's made for smaller guns). I had a piece of innertube on my original Shield back in 2012 too (when the original Shield 1st came out).

That's the exact one I have - the G34 :) - The John Wick 2 package.

I am currently waiting on a Glock 19 to come back from them with the Combat Master package.

Thanks for the advice and the pictures. I didn't know that TTI offered just front and back strap stippling. It and interesting possibility because I have 25 lpi on my Nighthawk but carry it with VZ double diamond grip panels that are rated a 2/5 aggressiveness. So that really may be an options. But 13 months o_O.....and I thought sending my 1911 in to Nighthawks to make changes for 3 months was a pain :censored:. I actually did take the "cheap route" and got a bicycle inner tube and did what the Hogue Jr. does, and I have to say that the grip texture it is pretty tacky and I like it. Going to take it out tomorrow and zero the Holosun.

I actually had both in the past. Well, not the 34, but I had several 17's and a 22 or 23 (I can't remember). It was really the grip angle that made me switch. I actually still love Glocks, but its like over time my wrists and elbows seem like they can't handle the aggressive angle anymore. It seems more mental, but I defiantly feel it.

I put some Hogue's on several of my Glocks years ago and I like them but they added so much width. I actually went with the inner tube idea on my Shield, and I have to say that I am actually impressed. It is much gripper than I expected (did a little dry fire yesterday when I put it on).

My local shop has some Hogue Jr's. I think (even though I used the inner tube) I will go give them another look. I initially was looking at the one that also had the beaver tail.

Well, TTI will only work on certain guns - Glock being their main bread and butter. I believe they will texture a 365. I can't remember if they offer Shield textuturing. I think I previously saw it on their website, but can't say for sure.

I think the only one they will texture the front and backstraps on is a Glock, though. Maybe you can call them and work something out. But if you go by their website only, I don't think that is an option on anything but Glocks.

The thing I like about the Hogue Jr is the 1 finger groove and the very small palm swells. For me, it makes the Shield Plus grip perfect. Hogue makes a grip specifically for the SHield - I don't know if it fits the Shield Plus. It probably does. But, I don't want the ribber grip to go all the way up the grip tang. I like the Hogue Jr grip better.

Use the favored "internet gun forum method" for installation.

Fill up a pot of water - boil it. Once the water is already boiling, drop the Hogue grip into the boiling water. Leave it in for exactly 60 seconds. You will need to use a spoon to hold it down, as it will want to float. (DON'T leave it in the water the entire time the water heats up to start boiling)

But, don't hold it against the bottom or the sides of the pot.

After 60 seconds, take it out and dry it. In a few seconds, it will be cool enough to touch. Install it now. It is hot, so it stretches better. Then, when it cools, it will shrink down.

On some guns, the rubber grip can slide around on the gun. This method minimizes that. Plus, the texture on the SHield helps prevent that too. Once you get it on, it ain't moving. So, make sure you adjust it how you want initially. If you want to try to move it later, that grip texture on the Shield Plus makes it much harder once the rubber cools.

I just did this a week ago again on my latest Shield Plus with night sights I picked up.

Yes, I hate the fullsize Handall with the multiple finger grooves and huge palm swells. They make the gun grip too big for my hands. The Hogue Jr is much better.

I have used them on multiple guns over the years - here are a couple of others I happen to have pics handy of...

I used to throw a Talon on everything, but now I use Hogue Wrapter DIY panels in the block texture. Game changer for me. Love it, Never going back.
