Has anyone had a chance to play with the Taurus 1911?? Ive never been a fan of the 1911, guess cause Im a youngin and that large cold hunk of steel just doesnt seem as aggressive as the M&P's, Glocks, and XD's. But I held a friends SA 1911 Operator, didnt even fire it, just held it and was instantly obsessed. I cant get it off my mind!! I've been researching and all the big name 1911's seem comparable but wayyyyyyyyy out of my budget. The blued Taurus is reasonably priced and "sounds" like a good weapon. I was just wondering if any of you have a first hand account..

I first fired a 1911 during training for the MP's back in the mid-fifties and was immediately impressed with the gun although I did not get into personal handguns until about a year and a half ago. Got my two M&P's--fullsize and compact--and then got the yen for a 1911 because they just felt so good in my hand and because of my long ago military experience. After looking at Springfields in many flavors, I finally picked up the PT1911 last summer. I settled on the Taurus because of price, because it had several features such as extended beavertail, and a few other stock items. I've only got about 100 rounds through the pistol but it as been reliable with my limited use of it. There's a lot of sentiment on the gun forums against the Taurus brand but so far my experience has been positive. For me it's been a good purchase that probably saved me around $300 for a comparable Springfield Loaded model.

If you like the M&P then you will (Todd excepted  ) love the 1911. I'm an old 1911 guy and fell in love with the M&P because it's a totally reliable polymer pistol with (except for the trigger) the feel of a 1911. For target work there is nothing like the trigger of a well tuned 1911, and little else that even approaches the accuracy potential of a true match grade example. On the other hand for self/home defense I prefer the more forgiving 5-6lb M&P trigger.

The problem is that not all 1911s are stake your life reliable out of the box. Most full-sized ones are... but with everybody and their dog making their own flavor and competing on either price, features, accuracy, quality or some combination of the above - quality and warranties are all over the place. The good news is that most are dead reliable, and once the occasional lemon is gotten up and running and feeding reliably it will still be doing so for your grand kids.

Here's an earlier discussion of the various flavors.

Taurus

I read a review of the Taurus 1911 by Clint Smith. Mr. Smith gave the Taurus very high marks after putting several thousand rounds through it and having some experienced friends do the same. I belive it was in Handgunner magazine. Mr. Smith isn't one to mince words so I would take his review very seriously. I am in the same situation. I'm saving for an AR build at the moment and after that I want to invest in a 1911. Doing the research is almost as much fun as making the purchase.

For back ground on 1911's read this by Hilton Yam.

Get on the 1911 forums and ask the same question.

I was issued 1911's for a whole lot of years, owned lots of them, and still have quite a few. I have a sentimental attachment to the pistol but now I prefer polymer. 1911's have a lot of points of failure, and require lots of maintenance. Most of the time I prefer the lighter weight, higher round count, lower maintenance, and fewer points of failure of Glock's and M&P .45's. I actually prefer the feel of polymer as well. Sacrilege I know...

If I were looking for a low cost 1911 I would look at Springfield first though. Either a Mil-Spec or loaded model. Springfield has great customer service.

I've been doing research out the wazoo for weeks. I think that my wife would be happier if I were on porn site's, than looking at 1911's. I am going to ATTEMPT to follow Dales wise advice and wait till I know for sure what I want. We'll see what happens..

Plain and simple, the Taurus PT-1911 is a really good firearm that sometimes gets a bad rap because of a low price. Taurus is providing lots of goodys at a reasonable price. Now the stainless models are starting to show up.

I bought my PT 1911 18 months ago for $430 NIB. It has been a great pistol for me, totally reliable and very accurate. It is my only 1911, and may well be the only one I ever own. They are going up in price now, and may not be the huge value they were when I bought-for $600+ there are other choices that bear looking into.

Good idea! Besides SW1911 aren't all that much more.
Using the MSRP from their respective web sites....

- Taurus PT1911 ..... $703.00

- S&W SW1911PD ..... $1,082.00

That's a $379.00 difference. I'd say the SW1911's are a tad more....

Edit: FWIW I don't dislike Taurus or the PT1911. What I dislike is Taurus' horrible customer service history and reputation for taking anywhere from a couple of weeks to a half a year or longer to complete repairs. For those willing to forget that they even have a warranty and deal with repairs themselves or out of pocket the PT1911 is a fine first 1911. My only quibble is with the sights and the lack of a good selection of replacements. That's a personal taste issue.

If I personally were going into a PT1911 I would be assuming the worst because of the lack of CS, and that I would be paying ~$100-150 for a local shop to do an action/trigger/reliability job and another $40-50 to recut the sight grooves (not counting the sights) for Novak's. In other words upgrade it to a box-stock SW1911 minus the S&W warranty. But that's just my taste. You may get a perfect example right out of the box.

Now once Taurus gets its CS/repair act together (I hear it's getting better) I'll go back to recommending them to people that like the stock sights.

I got one for $480 NIB @ a gun show in Atlanta recently. I just love it.

No, I don't pay MSRP on anything. However, without taking the time to do the extra research for the BEST price when I first posted above, I used MSRP as a starting point.

With that said...

S&W1911 SKU108285 - MSRP is $1,051.00... Bud's price is $748.00

Taurus 1911B - MSRP is $703.00... Bud's price is $504.00

That's a $244.00 price difference. I'll still stand by my original statement, "I'd say the SW1911's are a tad more".
