Thoughts on Ported PC shield?

Just scored my first ported pistol (actually, a ported 9mm slide for my shield .40) but havent had a chance to shoot it. What are your thoughts and/or experiences with ported barrels?

I have a ported 3.1" Shield Plus and an unported 3.1" SHield Plus

There IS a difference, but it is not that great. You can tell, but honestly, just barely... I mainly bought the gun because it was a PC version. I wanted the better trigger and better sights.

My wife's Shield is a 1.0 PC 9MM with the ported barrel/slide. My 1.0 Shield as a standard model. I have never really noticed a difference.

On my 1.0 5" PC 9MM I can see the difference right off the bat. Very easy to see/tell the decrease in muzzle rise when you fire it.

I used to have a 1.0 PC ported Shield.

I couldn’t tell the difference who shooting slow fire.
When shooting 2-3 shots per second; the pistol seemed to just hang there in place, with no muzzle rise.

I never had any problems with fouling blowback, either.
It didn’t even smudge my white shirt when I was shooting from half-hip, or the low retention position.

Are the barrels ported on the PC version or just the slide? Other than be slightly lighter would only a ported slide make a difference?

The barrels and slides are ported on our Shield PC 9MM and 1.0 5" PC 9MM.

I slide with metal removed for weight reduction purposes is one thing. A slide with metal removed to allow gases from a ported barrel to escape are usually differently shaped where the metal is removed. On a factory set up/M&P anyway. The M&Ps are the only thing I've bought new that have ported barrels/slides.

I have a couple 4" Shield 2.0 slides with aftermarket ported barrels but the barrels are slightly longer than the slide and the ports are in the barrel that sticks out in front of the slide.

A ported barrel, inside an unported slide, could be dangerous to the pistol and to the shooter.

Hmmmm interesting. I wonder if that has to do with barrel length, and leverage?

Sorry, I wasnt very clear. Both barrel and slide are ported. I doubt a ported slide without a ported barrel would have much effect.

On another forum, someone put their ported Shield barrel in an unporter slide, and they destroyed the slide. I think it took several shots, but still a dumb thing to do. They posted pics

Lol, they didnt really think that through. I would imagine the blast would also ruin the frame.

I read not long ago a warning (I think from a manufacturer) about using certain jacketed or plated bullets in a ported barrel because the jacket can sheer off and eject out the ports. I have no experience with ported barrels. Any truth to that? Has anyone experienced this problem?

I think that is Blazer 9mm that has that warning on the box. Dunno if it is a real issue though or just lawyer stuff.

I shot a bunch of Blazer Brass thru my ported one before I found out about that. I never had an issue. But who knows if I have been breathing in a ton of lead.

My understanding was that the problem was the jacket material ejecting out the ports as shrapnel. Very small of course.

Yes; those ports bear no resemblance to comp ports, which is what most shooters probably think of…

Not sure that I understand. Can you explain to a noob the difference between the types of ports?

Hey Steve!
Compensated pistols have a compensator (usually not removable) mounted to the muzzle of the barrel; to expand and direct the gasses upward to negate/lessen the recoil effects that want to push the gun upward and backward during the recoil impulse. Compensators are usually mounted in front of the muzzle end of the slide.

The ports on a Shield are small cuts/holes in the barrel, with corresponding cuts in the slide; that provide an offset of the upward recoil impulse.

As I’ve stated here before; my old ported PC Shield’s ports effects weren’t that noticeable during slow fire. But, when shooting fast (2-3 shots per second); the pistols just hung nicely in place. There was negligible upward recoil impulse.

Ahhhh. Now I understand. Thanks Rick. I was picturing the ported barrel.
