I have been thinking of something like this for a few years. You can go as wide or tall as you want. A fire department near me used 8 container and made a 3 story fire training building, all steal so they can start fires in it, fill it with smoke and practice. This guy did a great job. 134 picture and his roughed out plans are on the web page. Check it out, cheap strong and easy to get. I am very impressed with what he has done to his.

Their walls are going to rot from the inside and they are likely to get sick building syndrome...

  • Should have used fiberglass batt without the vapor barrier
  • Should not have used the additional vapor/air barrier
  • Those metal walls will not dry to the outside, they are an air/vapor barrier and will have to dry to the inside, but can't with the interior barriers
  • Moisture will get into those walls from the inside and condense on that metal at night and in cooler weather
  • It will get wet and mold, likely rotting the wood and corroding the metal
  • Where is the active ventilation since the thing looks sealed up tight?
  • The car siding wall looks nice, but it won't pass as an ignition barrier under the IRC

Bad building science...

Looks nice except outside is to square and plain. Needs to add something to make it look a little more housey and less boxy imo.
Have a similar idea in the back of my mind for a place we are looking to get for our GTFO spot.
Not so much a house but a living quarters style for when SHTF.

Interesting point Jason and as usual you are probably right. They would very definitely need to have some kind of system to get the moisture out. The metal walls will cause condensation to build up on them when the temp cools down. That will be a problem and the mold along with bad air inside won't take long to happen.

Could it be foamed instead of batts?
IMHO spay on foam, closed or open cell, either one of these will be the best insulation available. Spray on could be applied to the exterior or interior of the home.
