What would be your fantasy IDPA/Carry M&P?

Mine would be a M&P 40 that includes:

a “tactical” slide (like the Glock 35)

No mag safety

No internal lock

Truglo tritium/fiber optic front sight

Warren Tactical rear sight with a single tritium dot (like the Heinie Straight Eights)

Burwell trigger job (got to have it!)

What about the rest of you?

The only improvements to my MP40 that I could think of would be night sights and a trigger job, other than that it's about perfect as it is.

Pretty close to what I'd do. I have been talking with dan and am debating about going all out.

MP40:

No mag safety,

No internal lock,

Truglo tritium/FO green front sight,

Warren Tactical rear with stacked dots ala straight eights (Rear tritium insert in orange),

Burwell slide melt,

Burwell trigger job,

Burwell shark skin grip enhancement (applied to the thumbs foward area of the frame as well),

Bowie Tactical Mag cut outs,

Reliability treatment (chamber and feed ramp polished),

Internals, Magazine housings all sent to Robar for NP3 finish,

Slide refinished in boron carbide finish by ionbond.

No...I haven't put any thought into this.

I like your style ClosetCaseNerd! I may have to steel some of your ideas for my dream gun. I like the Bowie Tactical Mag cut outs and am interested in the boron carbine finish.

I am holding out for a “tactical” length slide for my base gun. I hope Smith produces one and in the relative near future.

Hum...

So far I think I'd take a bone stock M&P9 (no lock/no mag safety) and send it to Bowie or Burwell for a slide melt and have the beaver tail removed. Then I'd have a set of Warren Tactical sights installed and I'd be good to go.

It's fine but if I choose to conceal carry a full size M&P I'll probably have it removed to make the overall length of the gun a little less. The Compact does not have it either.

I like the Bowie Tactical Mag cut outs and am interested in the boron carbine finish.

I am just wonder if its worthwhile doing all that work to a plastic gun that will be carried and brought to pistol classes... That's the war going on in my head. Also, I wonder what changes we will see to the pistol in the next 2-3 years. I rather use this as a beater, and have one that's a 2nd or 3rd generation, and apply my ideas to that.

Think its silly to apply all that to a working gun?

And for the Ion Bond/Bodycote/Boron Carbide finish I need to find a lead for that. Apparently they are a bit elusive if you aren't going through one of their contractors.

m4arc: Makes sense to me

ClosetCaseNerd: I don’t think it’s silly. I would get the most work done on the gun you shoot the most. But if there is doubt in your mind about investing a lot of money in the gun then don’t. It’s not worth agonizing over and you can always do it later. The M&P a great gun out of the box and does not NEED any additional work. Just my humble opinion.

I wonder what smith would change on a 2nd generation model?

I suppose your right Eddie...I mean, I could apply all the whiz bang stuff to a competition only gun, but it'd be wasted, the carry gun is what I carry and use all the time. It would be the one to come with me to classes and seminars. I just really wanted someone to justify me putting in half the pistols cost in work and tell me I'm not a fool for it.

Good thread here as I wil be using my new M&P40 in IDPA matches. The only thing I'll want to be doing is tweaking the sights a little. But my BIG question is do the boneheads at IDPA HQ consider the M&P to be an "Enhanced Service Pistol" like they do the Springfield XD? How they justify making XD 40cal shooters compete against guys shooting solid steel, full size, highly tuned, 1911's chambered in 9mm is truly beyond me. Especially when they harp on the "level playing field" thing. Sheesh. Of course, I'm only just being cantankerous here. I don't really shoot the IDPA game as a "serious competitor". It's just a lot of fun plus a great way to experience shooting situations that I can't create by myself....moving targets, etc. And it's always great to hang out with other gun culture folks. Even IF I have to "compete" against $2,000 handguns! Which, by the way, I think that any M&P shooter will have to do if they grind off the beavertail, whether or not the M&P is considered a SSP.
