What's wrong with the M&P?

Welcome! I personally don't think you can go wrong with the M&P. If you do some research on the boards there are many people that have put thousands even tens of thousands of rounds through them without a problem. About the only criticism that people seem to have is that some initially have gritty triggers. The break is clean and pull is smooth but sometimes this is the case. The big plus is that it smooths out even more with use and if you still aren't happy or don't want to wait trigger jobs are very reasonable and quite effective. No worries.

Well, my concerns are the bullets don't go where I want them ... but then again, I'm new to shooting and have a lot to learn!



Honestly, as a newbie, the only thing I can say is that I find the point on the trigger just before it goes boom is a little tough to get by.



Granted, as I said, I'm new and probably need to learn proper technique ... For the moment I follow what I was taught as a child shooting my .22 rifle, and that was to keep slowly squeezing until it fired, never certain of exactly when it would occur.



The only thing I base my preferred trigger "feel" on is the LEM trigger I felt on the H&K at a gun show. It was the smoothest of all the triggers I pulled, and the point when the gun went 'click' was very easy to cross.



The H&K didn't fit my hand well enough though, not to mention a very steep price tag. I imagine the M&P can have the trigger adjusted to approach the LEM trigger on the H&K by folks like the Amazing Dan Burwell, but I want to first learn how to shoot the stock pistol well enough before making any changes.



Aside from a few broken strikers and site/aiming issues, you'll be hard-pressed to find anything truly "bad" about the M&P in any caliber. It's really too new for there to be any long term use problems, and for the moment, just about everyone here has nothing but praise for it.



For an under $500 pistol, (for some $450 in your hands), you really can't go wrong!



But hey, I'm just a newbie, so take my opinion for what it's worth!

Here are my issues with the M&P. Understand that I love the ergos and am happy with the gun. I shot an IDPA match last month using the MP40 and got 3rd in SSP so I know the gun runs and shoots, but there are some issues.



1. The grip texture extends a bit out onto the bottom of the trigger guard. After a few hundred rounds in a practice session, I get somewhat raw on my middle finger where it rubs. If I didn't want to keep the gun stock for SSP, I would polish this area smooth.



2. The trigger is not great out of the box. It's not horrible but it's bad enough that I did Dan's trigger changes before I even took it to the range and fired it. I got it to 5lbs and smooth without changing springs and it is nice enough now.



3. I had lots of issues with my reloads having failure to feed. These were all solved with a tap to the mag. I could actualy slowly push the mag up and the gun would go into battery. My reloads all functioned fine in my Kahr and a HK Compact. I have since reset my crimp die to crimp tighter and the FTF have been greatly reduced. I still had one at the IDPA match that cost me a stage. This may be a mag catch height issue, a mag feed lip issue or my reloads.



4. The factory sights stink. The rear dots are too big and too bright. I ended up blacking them out with a sharpy. I can't understand why SW went with a propritary dovetail instead of the ones that are already used in the market. If I can't find any in the next few months, I'll probably dremel a wider notch in the factory rear.





All this said, I still love the MP and will probably get a Compact at some point for carry. The ergos, grip angle and adjustable grips aready put it ahead of my Glock. The trigger is now better than my Glock. If the reliablility comes up the the Glock level, SW will sell a lot more of these.



As the gun gets older, the aftermarket should step up with support like they did with Glocks.

My issue: The Bullite I got for it does not work with it. It does work with other 9mms, and the M&P shoots a pencil out of the barrell (and shoot real ammo) just fine, so we can point fingers back and forth all day as to what went wrong where.



OTOH, the Rovatec people are supposed to get me a new back bit that may work with a M&P9 ... I've been waiting for a month now.

what is "wrong"? Not much at all.



Needs provisions for a lanyard loop.



Don't like the rear sight - dots are too large relative to the front.



Magazine followers need to position the cartridge higher than it does and the angle that the cartrdige makes with, say, the counter top the mag base is sitting on needs to be more agressive (i.e., nose up).



I give the pistol 9 to 9.5 out of 10.
