Will S&W ever make a G19 sized M&P 9?

I was hoping the compact model would be the same size as a G19 but it looks like it will closer to the G26 in size.

What I really want is a 15 round G19 sized M&P 9! Is there any chance that S&W will make one?

IMHO, if they made one it would be the top seller in the M&P line!

Despite its 17+1 capacity, when chambered in 9mm, the M&P seems to be a little smaller than the G17, but a little larger than the G19.
Funny you ask, I layed my MP9 over my G19 and it was hardly bigger. Very similiar in size.
Theres only about a 1/2 inch difference in the G17 and G19 in length and height. But today i was watching the outdoor channel and ended up watching some self defence program. It looked like Masad ayoob was carrying a S&W M&P9. At first i thought it was a G19. What id like to see is either a G19 or M&P the length of a G19 with the height of a G26. Ive seen customs done this way and would be perfect for my G26 made hands....yet a weeee bit longer sight radius.

Im real tempted on the M&P line... Though the Glock has been around a good while now and theres alot of good info and help out there. I know alot of you might not be a fan of Glock. But they are very good tools. I hope the M&P line will do the same. Once i get to see a M&P9 and a M&P9 compact side by side...I may end up with one of these smiths myself. 8)
The Glock 17 has a 4.5" barrel - the S&W M&P 9 has a 4.25" barrel - and the Glock 19 has a 4.0" barrel. So with regards to barrel length - the M&P is right in between.

With regards to over all length and height - the S&W M&P is dang near the same as the Glock 17.

However "they" (S&W engineers) probably figured - heck we are with a 1/4" of the G19 anyway - so for our compact model might as well go as small as the G26.

Hope this helps,

cheers

It's not so much the slide/barrel length I want but I sure would like that extra 1/2 inch off the grip to make it easier to conceal. I know it doesn't sound that much but that extra 1/2 inch makes difference for me.

Regardless, I will probably end up with an M&P 9 sooner or later...
Im sure once the compacts get popular...pistol smiths will offer grip reductions in height. Then you'd just use a compacts magazine in your full size M&P. Personally, i wouldnt mind going that route. Ive seen some sweet G19s that had their grip taken down to the height of a G26.
For me the M&P grip is about as easy to conceal as the Glock 19 because it is thinner. The M&P grip is slightly longer, but not as "pointy" at the rear of grip. I have not carried my M&P much yet b/c I don't have a good holster for it yet. Once I get some more carry time with the M&P I will know for sure which one is easier. My carry gun is currently a Glock 32, which is the same size as the Glock 19; it has spent many, many hours on my side!!!
YukonGlocker....Have you tried Comp Tac?

They carry/make holsters and such for many companies including S&W and the S&W M&P.
No I have not tried any of thier products. I would like to try the C-Tac, but I am partial to the Milt Sparks VM2.
That C-T.A.C. is mighty sweet! Ive only held the M&P's so not sure on how they are in that holster. But im bettin they are just as comfortable in one.
The news I get is that the folks at S&W are going to give the sigma a pretty complete over haul and it will be the 19 size gun. I think it gets a new trigger like or similar to the M&P. I don't like this idea but who am I. I would like to the see a 19 size gun also. I am just going to build a SHort Grip "SG" conversion for myself and be done with it. CHECK 360

Hmmm, interesting...I'm not too hot on a upgraded Sigma so I'll probably skip that... :?

However, I do like your idea about a shrot grip conversion but the only thing that bugs me about it that now the mags will also need to be modified. tNow anytime you get new mags you need to send them out to get modified.

There could also be reliablity issues since the mags and springs are being cut to fit. I guess I'll have to wait and see how this turns out. Hopefully Smith and Wesson will change their minds and make a G19 sized M&P instead of using the Sigma...
YoJimbo,

No need for custom mags, at least not as soon as smith releases the compact mags. You just cut the full size frame down to where the compact mags fit.

Now if you wanted some thing in between then some custom mags would be in order. But I am with Mr Bowie on this one, I cannot wait to do some M&P chopping.
good luck with that grip tool and all...
Dan, I am not cutting the gun to the sub compact size. It will be an in between size grip. I have done this to the XD also but was able to rebuild S&W 6906 mags to make a glock 19 size XD. Rob Leatham loved it and took all the measurements but Springfield did not jump on it. As for cutting the mags, it is a huge pain in the Bu.... but I have done it before to get what I wanted. Tuning the mag springs is not that big of a problem just a little time. The reforming the bottom of the mag is the trouble. You can kill a mag if not real carefull. The folding new mag base pad lips can crack the metal. NOT fun. But you only need a couple to carry so the pain can be worth it if the size is important. CHECK 360 David.
Mr. Bowie that sound really sweet.

I did a 1911 chopped frame one time that I had to Shorten the mag and know what you mean about the bottom mag lips it is more than a little challangeing.
