So here's my story. I have a full size M&P .40

Many months ago I purchased a LaserMax Uni-Max Rail Mount Red Laser http://www.lasermax.com/product.php?id=104

I started having problems with it after about 100 rounds. While firing, the laser would randomly go off then come back one when you touched the switch or fired a few more rounds.



To make a long story short - after about 4 more exchanges (yup I have tried about 5 or 6 of them), LaserMax sent me a "modified" unit that was tested with 600 rounds.

Well, I took it to the range and with less then 100 rounds - same problem



So question is - has anyone else had problems with these?

Almost everyone here who had added a laser to their M&P (50 or so) went with the Crimson Trace and as far as I know they are happy with their choice. The question of second and third line products comes up regularly because someone either bought, or are thinking of saving money on, another type/brand of laser and it invariably proves to be a decision they regret. Just the other day a newb posted that he was going with the LaserLyte but was cautioned against going cheap, although the LaserMax is not as inexpensive your post shows them repeatedly to be undependable.



Of course, other members should feel free to speak up if their experience has proven otherwise.

Edit: Probably half of us bought our CT Lasergrips from Shooters Resource. They have the best price, they include shipping and supply you with a free batteries for life coupon (one set per year).

 

Seems to me that the pounding the rail mount laser takes & the crud that's gonna get on it from the flash is what helped me decide to go with the Crimson Trace. I did some research before I purchased and I found that others experienced problems with the laser. The CT Grips fits like it's a part of the gun and the diode is so far back unless you look close you don't even notice that's its their.

I am thinking about the crimsom trace as my next move - I would not say I went with the laser max to save money, it was still $170.00

I just wanted the rail laser to be able to more it between guns - when i got it I was actually going to put it on a 1911 or my Cx4

wlcohen...I'm not a lefty but I have read here where others have said that the thumb was not a problem for shooting left handed. If you haven't try a search here because there is tons of posts for both left handed CT questions & Crimson Trace questions. I don't mean to be jumping in but throught I would help out. I am a lefty. I bought a new J-Frame with the CT allready on it from S&W. I could not sight it in, the beam keep hitting the cyl.. I contacted CT and they said "yup thats a problem for leftys". Well I sold that gun for my M&P 40 FS.



I just bought the S&W CT grip (same as CT but the grip has M&P on it) and I love it.



I had the large grip on so it was a change, I would say the CT grip is about half way between medium to a large size, maybe alittle more to the medium side. The beam does hit my slide release (right side) alittle but I have to do another round of shooting to get it in better (and get rid of my Mass 10 Lb trigger). I was shooting more the other day to see what round and round weight the gun liked so I spent more time on that.

Had that problem with a $80 dollar laserlyte. They sent me a new switch cover and it fixed it...for now. The only problem I have now is the switch cover has a tendancy to walk off. Of course, it also requires a special holster, which I do not have. I'm much happier with the CT grips on another gun...but not so pleased with having to pay the price of an inexpensive handgun for them.

 

Next week I am actually going to send my M&P with the laser on it to lasermax so they can try and figure out why I have had trouble with 7 units.

When you buy an airplane many pay as much again for optional navigation, weather and communication electronics as they did for the airframe. It is the cost and performance of the system that is important, not the cost of the base component relative to the options.
